The Inheritance by Michael Phillips

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Litfuse in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

The Inheritance by Michael Phillips was a super long book. I liked the book for the most part, but it is super long, and the font isn’t the biggest so at times it was hard to me to read. Had I know all of that before I would have requested the ebook version because that way I could have made the font bigger and easier for me to read without straining my eyes. With all that said I loved the story and how it was written. I did feel at times that there were almost too many details, and I found that I got bogged down in all the details. I did enjoy this book for the most part, but I don’t think that I will check out any other books by him. I enjoyed how the author wrote like people from Scotland talk. I did have to read it out loud so that I could figure out what was being said but I enjoyed those parts of the book. It is a book that I would recommend to people, but I would recommend getting a digital version of the book if your eyes get strained easily.

The Inheritance by Michael Phillips

About The Book

The death of the clan patriarch has thrown the tiny Shetland Islands community of Whale’s Reef into turmoil. Everyone assumed MacGregor Tulloch’s heir to be his grand-nephew David, a local favorite, but when it is discovered that MacGregor left no will, David’s grasping cousin Hardy submits his own claim to the inheritance, an estate that controls most of the island’s land. And while Hardy doesn’t enjoy much popular support, he has the backing of a shadowy group of North Sea oil investors. The courts have frozen the estate’s assets while the competing claims are investigated, leaving many of the residents in financial limbo. The future of the island–and its traditional way of life–hangs in the balance.

Loni Ford is enjoying her rising career in a large investment firm in Washington, DC. Yet in spite of her outward success, she is privately plagued by questions of identity. Orphaned as a young child, she was raised by her paternal grandparents, and while she loves them dearly, she feels completely detached from her roots. That is until a mysterious letter arrives from a Scottish solicitor. . . .

Past and present collide in master storyteller Phillips’s dramatic new saga of loss and discovery, of grasping and grace, and of the dreams of men and women everywhere.

False Prophet by Richard Davis

Book Review Graphic

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are mine.

False Prophet by Richard Davis was another book that I knew I would like just because of the type of book it was. Right from the first chapter of this book I was hooked and I didn’t want to put the book down until I had finished it. There are so many things that I enjoyed about this book that I am not sure what to say. I loved how the author was able to make me truly believe what was happening in the book. I love when I read books, and I am left feeling like what occurred in the book could happen in the world. I liked all the characters in the book as well because like I just said I could see them living in the world. I love this authors style of writing and how he was able to me understand why the characters did the things that they did. He made me feel as if I was there with the characters and I love when authors can make the book come alive while I am reading it.  This book kept me wondering what was going to happen next which I always love because I tend to figure out what is going to happen so I love when I can’t figure out what is going happen.  This is the first I have heard of this author, and I can’t wait to check out more books by him in the future. If you love mystery/thrillers than I know, you will love this book.

Title:
Tears of the Silenced
Author: Misty Griffin
Publisher: Independent
Pages: 444
Genre: Biography/Memoir
One freezing morning in early March I made a dash
for a tiny police station in rural Minnesota. I was a frightened Amish
girl with no where to go, a second grade education and no ID or social security
card…… Based on the authors tragic true life story.
When I was six years old my
family started to live and dress like the Amish. My sister and I were kept as
slaves on a mountain ranch where we were subjected to almost complete
isolation, sexual abuse and extreme physical violence. My step-father kept a
loaded rifle by the door at all times and we were to terrified to try to
escape. We knew that no rescue would ever come because only a couple of people
even knew we existed and they did not know us well enough to care.
In my late teens my parents
feared we would escape and took us to an Amish community where we were adopted
and became baptized members. I was devastated to once again find myself in a
world of fear, animal cruelty and sexual abuse. Going to the police was
forbidden. A few years later I was sexually assaulted by the bishop, I knew I
had to get help and one freezing morning in early March I made a dash for a
tiny police station in rural Minnesota. When I refused to recant my police
report I was excommunicated from the Amish and found myself plummeted into the
strange modern world with only a second grade education and no ID or social
security card.
To
all abuse survivors out there, please be encouraged, the cycle of abuse can be
broken. Today, ten years later, I am a nursing student working towards my
Masters degree and a child abuse awareness activist. This is my story…….

Book Excerpt:

I walked through the front door of
the tiny police station and went over to a heavy wood counter, where a
middle-aged policewoman sat at a computer. She looked up as I stood there, watching
her. I saw a surprised look on her face as she stared back at me. I imagined I
was very different from the people who normally walked up to her desk.
I was a young Amish woman, just a
little over five feet tall, wearing an almost ankle-length, plain, teal-colored
dress and apron, followed by knee-length black socks and black shoes. My coat
was a homemade denim coat with a high collar and hooks and eyes going down the
front. On my head was a stiff
white Amish kapp that covered nearly all my reddish-brown hair and was tied in
a small bow under my chin.
I was shaking as I stood there,
looking at the woman. I tried to get up enough courage to say something, I knew
I was going to be shunned by the Amish church for what I was doing. I could not
speak. The thought of being shunned was terrifying but I did not know what else
to do. My whole body was trembling….

About the Author
When Misty left the Amish she had a bare second grade
education and suffered severe PTSD caused by the horrifying abuse she suffered
as a child and later at the hands of the Amish bishop. Today, ten years later
she is a nursing student, wife and a Child abuse/Sexual assault awareness
activist.

Find Her by Lisa Gardner

Book Review Graphic

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.  I was not compensated in any other way.

Find Her by Lisa Gardner was one of the better books that I have read in past few months.  I read a ton of books as most of you know but this book took me back to the types of books that I loved to read before I started to review books here.  I love books like this because they keep me on the edge of my seat, and I don’t want to stop reading them until I know how it all ends.  I know that these books can be overwhelming to some people but for the most part, I love them.  Right from the start I loved how the author was able to make me understand what it would feel like to be somewhat buried alive or, at least, be in a box that all you can do is lay down.  I also loved that Flora is a survivor and you get to see how she survived and how is able to help others in the small ways that she does.   I can’t say enough good things about this book and this author.  If you love reading thriller/suspense books then I know you don’t want to miss this one.  I can’t wait to check out other books by this author and see how they are compared to this one.

Cancelled Vows by Lauren Carr

Tur FTC

Cancelled Vows by Lauren Carr was an interesting book, to say the least.  This is one of those books that nothing goes right from the start and at times I had to laugh because I couldn’t see some of the things happening but other parts I could totally see happening.  Like when Gnarly ate the wedding rings I could totally see that happening but then you find out the David is already married when he goes to get his marriage license, but he claims that he had no idea that he got married years before.  I enjoyed this story but at times, I wish I had others books in this series before so that I would know more of the backstory but you can just pick this book up and understand what is happening and who the characters all are.  I really enjoyed this book even though at times all I could think about is how there is no way that anything like this could happen.  This is the first book I have read by this author and I am for sure going to be adding more books by this author to my pile of books I want to read.  I think pretty much everyone would love this book and have a good time reading it.

Excerpt

Looking out over the crowd, a flash of sky blue caught his eye. He did a double take.

It was her.

Wearing a long, flimsy dress that hugged her ample breasts and flowed to the floor in a pool of fluff, she stole the spotlight. The green tips had vanished from the the blonde ringlets now piled high on her head, her nails painted a soft pink. Her face looked pale and ethereal, her skin glowing in the dim, chandelier lights. The diamond stud at her nose twinkled, but not nearly as much as her round eyes which seemed to fade into the dress. She looked nothing like the tough, leather-bound smart-ass at the airport, but an exquisite, delicate woman.

A chameleon.

Who was she? Security was tight, with invitation-only admittance. Now was his chance to find out why she skipped out on him and possibly get more information for Jaydan and Grayson Donner.

He squeezed Hope’s elbow. “Excuse me a minute. I see someone I know.”

Making his way through the ocean of body heat and free-flowing drinks, he found her standing at a bar height table with two couples, a plate of food in front of her. The others ignored her while she dug into her extravagant fare.

“Sweetpea, fancy meeting you here.” He nodded at the others, a false smile pasted on his face.

A model of composure, she straightened her napkin on the table before turning to look at him. “Well, Honey Dump-”

She gave him a slow perusal, her eyes shining brighter the longer she looked. Heat climbed in his face and filtered through his body. That’s the second time he’d gotten hot and bothered around her. She was so…obvious about her attraction to him. It made him uncomfortable.

But, horny as hell.

Her voice barely carried over the buzz of conversation. “You take my breath away, Dumpling.”

Stick to business, Rose. Don’t let her distract you.

“What are you doing here?”

Picking up a cracker, she said, “Free food.” She scooped some caviar onto the cracker and took a bite.

God, the woman was a complete smart-ass. So, why in hell was he standing beside her, aroused, knowing she skipped out on him and could have information on a missing woman?

Dumb-ass, Rose.
