The Birth Mother by Seymour Ubell

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from iREAD Book Tours in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

The Birth Mother by Seymour Ubell was an interesting book for the most part.  There were times where I would get annoyed with how the story was being told. At times I had a hard time knowing if the author was talking or if the ghostwriter was talking.  I kind of understand why the book was written the way it was but it also bugged me a good part of the book. I just wanted them to pick one point of view and stick to that throughout the entire book.  I did feel bad for Shan throughout the entire book and I understand why she made the choices that she did because of the hell that she went through. I did enjoy the story that this book told and I loved getting to know real people and learn their stories through the author.  It made me sad that things like this happen in the world but I know that they still happen. If you are looking for a book to read that will make you think I would recommend this book to you.

Author: Jo A. Hiestand

Narrator: Tristan Kopta

Length: 7 hours 33 minutes

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press⎮2019

Genre: Mystery

Series: The McLaren Mysteries, Book 2

Release date: Oct. 23, 2019

One dark night, popular singer Kent Harrison goes missing after his performance at Tutbury Castle. When his body’s found in a forest, the police investigation focuses on Kent’s ex-wife, a local herbalist, a covetous colleague, and even the curator of another castle who tried to lure Kent into performing there.

But his occasional singing partner, Dave Morley, seems to have the biggest motive. He’s dying to make his name, money, and the big time, especially at the medieval Minstrels Court reenactment, where Kent’s appearance guarantees standing room only. Did Dave murder Kent to eliminate the competition…or had their partnership struck a wrong chord?

To entice him into investigating, ex-cop McLaren’s girlfriend plays detective. But Dena ends up in great danger. Now, McLaren must not only solve Kent’s murder but also rescue her. A hard task when a web of jealousy, anger, and lies covers the trails.

About The Author

Jo A. Hiestand

Jo A. Hiestand can usually be found at her computer, which is good, since she writes three mystery series.  It seems a natural progression from her job as a graphic artist – crafting word images on a sheet of paper instead of creating graphics on the computer screen. Between the two computer stints, she lived in Britain for her semi-pro folk singing career and became friends with several English police detectives. The latter relationship was not a consequence of the former calling, however, but all these UK aspects find their way into her books. When not tapping on the keyboard, Jo enjoys reading, baking, and photography. She lives in the St Louis area with her cat, Tennyson, and way too many kilts.

The Librarian Picks Her Poison by Amber Gilchrist

Amber Gilchrist lives in New Mexico with her husband and six children. She writes YA , Romantic Comedies, and series mysteries. She calls her lifetime of jumping from one job to another ‘experience’ for her books and not an inability to settle down. Amber loves mysteries and a good, happy romance. She also loves to laugh. Sometimes she likes all of them together.

A fan of quirky movies and indie books, Amber likes to be with her family, is socially inept, and fears strangers and small yippy dogs. She alternates between writing and being a mom. She tries to do both at the same time but her kids don’t appreciate being served lunch and told, “This is the hot dog of your discontent.” So mostly she writes when everyone else is in bed.

She has to figure out who really killed Gretchens step-father, a universally hated federal judge.

With a not small list of potential people the judge has wronged, Audrey and her friends have a rough ride ahead of them trying to decide who had a motive, means, and opportunity to put the judge in an early grave. With the help of Derek Hennessy, erstwhile enemy turned very good friend, and her normal crew of cohorts, Audrey wont stop until the threat no longer looms.

Top Ten List

  1. I’ve been to lots of foreign countries, including Germany, China, and Mexico among others.
  2. I have six kids, and yes that is a lot
  3. I was on a TV show in the early 90s.
  4. I used to pretend I was a fox/mermaid combination whenever my friends pretended to be superheroes.
  5. My first book was written in the 80s and the heroes name was Marvin. I don’t know why I thought this was a good idea.  Thankfully, it was lost many years ago.
  6. I have a weird autoimmune disorder that makes me potentally allergic to literally almost anything. And then then the next day I won’t be allergic to that particular thing anymore.  It’s sounds fake, but it’s not.  It’s called MCAS.
  7. I was a musical theater major my freshman year of college.
  8. I don’t really have a bucket list. But if I did the only thing that would be on it is going places.
  9. I don’t really watch TV or movies. They require a lot of attention for me and it always ends up feeling like a chore.  There’s probably only half a dozen shows I’ve actually seen every episode of, my favorite being Chuck.
  10. I LOVE true crime. Like in a way that is maybe slightly unhealthy .  I listen to so many true crime podcasts.

Snippet #3

“You can be poisoned by touching cyanide?”  Foster shuddered.

Nodding, Woody held up his phone for a second.  “I told you, it’s easy to make, but also easy to poison yourself.  It doesn’t take much of that liquid on the skin before you’re in real trouble.  The problem is, we would expect to see burning on his skin wherever it touched him.  The burning should be enough that it would be noticeable in an autopsy.  But nothing like that was mentioned.”

Gretchen crossed her arms.  “So he didn’t eat it, breathe it, or touch it?”

“Not that was indicated in his autopsy.  That’s all I can say.”

“So I’m being accused of murdering a guy I didn’t murder, in some way the cops can’t even explain?”

Woody’s mouth twisted.  “That’s about it.  I don’t know how Ted was poisoned.  But from reading the autopsy report, I can tell you that the police don’t know either.”

The Beijing Memorandum by JB Morris

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from iRead Book Tours in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

The Beijing Memorandum by JB Morris wasn’t my favorite book.  I don’t know that I can even tell you what I didn’t like about this book but I struggled to read it.  It took me a month to get through this book because I didn’t ever get hooked on what was happening. This is the third book in the series and I didn’t read the other two books so maybe I missed something.  I also felt like I was never able to relate to any of the characters so that was hard as well. It is very well written and I kept reading it because I hoped that it would get better but it never did that for me.  The one thing I did like about this book was that it made me think about what would happen if the same thing happened in today’s world. How much would it change our world and what type of changes would happen. I think that if you like heavy books on topics that might just happen you will probably enjoy this book. It just wasn’t the right fit for me and the books that I usually read.
