About One More Round

History doesn’t have to repeat itself… or does it?

GIA
Life was on track, going great,
And I couldn’t have been happier.
But then he walks back in,
The tall, dark, broody blast from my past,
The one that got away,
Or shall I say, the one I pushed away,

Now, he’s pushing the boundaries,
Demanding answers,
Ready to bring the past to the present,
For a chance at a future.

SIMON
As a professional gamer,
I’m focused and detailed,
Weighing all of my options.
After she left, I was lost, shattered,
And thought it was game over,
For me, for us.

But when I see her again,
There’s more at stake than just a game,
This time, I’m playing for keeps, ready for One More Round.

Against my better judgment, I stand and head for the kitchen under the guise of getting a drink. I open the fridge, surreptitiously trying to get her attention.
I close the door with a bit more force than necessary. Nothing. So, I walk up to the sink next to her and look out the window, too.
God, she smells good.
So damn good.
And she’s absolutely stunning. Her golden hair comes past her shoulders and falls in waves that make me think she’s been at the beach all day, though I know she hasn’t. Her slightly rounded nose and perfect pink lips are precisely how I remember them. But her dark-blue eyes always have a way of rooting out people’s bullshit, which is what I’m certain will happen if she ever looks up at me.
I’ve done my best to keep a physical distance from her. I don’t want to be too close, for fear that I will reach out and touch her, like old times. She was always so close to me when we were kids.
I brush her arm as I lift the pop to my mouth and take a drink. This startles her, but it only takes a second to regain her composure.
“What ya looking at?” I ask, not taking my eyes off the apartment building across the street.
“Oh, nothing. I was just thinking, I guess,” she sighs as she moves the bowl in her hands back under the running water.
“You guess? How do you not know?” I ask, using my same words from earlier, but in a gentler tone.
She looks at me this time, which is what I wanted. “Stop asking me questions if you always hate my answers.” She says it with a ghost of a smile.
Acting on its own, my shoulder bumps hers.
We’ve danced around each other for months. I haven’t touched her since that first night we met again as adults. I shook her hand because I was caught off guard. But today, we’ve touched twice. Where are the walls I’ve built?
She looks up at me with a hint of something in her eyes that I can’t quite figure out. Interest? Need? Maybe longing.
“I’m just kidding, G.” I smile at her. Something I haven’t done toward her in a very long time. Yeah, that look in her eyes is definitely longing.
She gives me a sad smile before turning to put the bowl on the drying rack. It isn’t lost on me that she’s hand-washing the dishes instead of letting the dishwasher take care of them.
“I really do want to know what’s got you staring out the window.”
She eyes me. “Why?”
I give this some thought. Why do I want to know so bad? Why do I care?
“Because I care?” Maybe I shouldn’t have asked. Yeah, I can see that was the wrong thing to say when she snorts and tosses an eye roll my way. A laugh escapes her lips but there’s no humor in it.
“Yeah, you care. Since when Simon? You can’t even look me in the eye. You don’t care. So, don’t waste your breath,” she spits out and starts shoving dishes in the dishwasher now, throwing all kinds of temper around with the task.
“Jeesh. Chill, alright? I guess old habits die hard. I can still tell when something is wrong. We do have a history. That won’t ever change,” I say, defending myself.
At this, she goes rigid. Ah-ha. Either bringing up the fact that we have a history or my telling her to chill—which she hates—has stopped her in her tracks; I’m guessing it’s a little bit of both.
“Just leave me alone, Simon,” she mutters.
“Is it your brother? Does he live here in Chicago? Are things better between the two of you or is he still an asshole with problems?” I can’t hold it in, I’ve got to know.
She puts the last cup in the washer and closes the door uncharacteristically slowly. She then wipes her hands on the towel, lays it down, and slowly turns to me.
Murderous.
If looks could kill, I’d be six feet under. She steps a tad closer to me.
“You … do not get to ask about him. You do not get to bring him up. Ever. Do not ever speak about him, or the past, to me or anyone.” Her voice is so low it makes my skin prickle.
“Uh, OK.” I gulp. This evil clone Gia is scary as shit.
She takes a step back, then turns to leave the kitchen.
Then as her words register, I realize.
“They don’t know, do they?”
She stops. Looks over her shoulder at me. Instead of anger, guilt clouds her eyes.
“No,” she says, and walks away.

Dead in a Week by Andrea Kane

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime Book Tours in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

Dead in a Week by Andrea Kane was a book that left me wondering if things like this really happen today.  I say that because as I was reading it, I could imagine things like this happening and that scares me.  I have no doubt that we live in a world were people would and could do things like this.  I have to say that I couldn’t figure out what was going to happen, and I loved that.  I was on the edge of my seat throughout most of the book because I was never sure what was going to happen next.  I have read several book similar books but this one sticks out to me because it seemed like it could really happen and if I found out tomorrow that they did happen it would shock me.  I fell in love with Abby right from the start she seemed like such a sweet little girl and because of her I fell in love with her dad because of her.  I must respect a man that has a little girl and does that job that Aidan does.  This is the first book that I have read by this author and I can’t wait read more by her because I fell in love with this author after I was done reading this book.  If you are looking for something new to read, I pick up a copy of this book and check it out.

The Buried Girl by Richard Montanari

Book Review Graphic

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

The Buried Girl by Richard Montanari was a book that left me shocked and made me not want to put it down until I was finished with it.  I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book when I read the description, but I am so glad that I did give it a chance because I fell in love with the author and this story.  I can’t wait to read more books by this author in the future because I loved this book.  There were parts where I was able to predict what was going to happen and that wasn’t very often, so it didn’t turn me off while I was reading the book.  There were parts that did shock me and took me by total surprise and that is a rare thing for me because I have read so many books and there are few things that are able to shock me anymore.  I am sure this is one of the reasons that I loved this book as much as I did.  I was able to read this book super quick because of how interested I was in this book.  If you are looking for a great mystery that has will keep you on the edge of your set than I would for sure pick this book up.

The Old Man’s Request by Joab Stieglitz

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Pump Up Your Book in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

The Old Man’s Request by Joab Stieglitz was an interesting book to say the least.  I did have a hard time staying interested in this book but because it was a shorter book, I was able to read it all in a few hours.  This is the first book in the series and since I did read this book, I am now thinking about reading the other books in the series because I want to know what is going to happen next and how it all works out in the end.  This isn’t a book that I would usually pick up, but I am glad that I did get it to review because I love finding new authors and also getting books that I usually wouldn’t pick up because I have so many great authors and books.  This book also has supernatural aspects in it, so I enjoyed that as well.  If you are looking for an easy read and something a little bit different than I would recommend this book.

He scratched his eyebrow, hitting the rim of his glasses. His body tightened and for some odd reason, his eyes lasered to my mouth, watching me chew with rapt attention. “Can you stop eating that strawberry?” He gulped, his eyes moving to watch my neck. “Please.”
My jaw stopped chewing and I swallowed, my eyes wide in surprise. What was up with him?
He sighed with relief when I sat the mostly-eaten strawberry down in the bowl. “Listen, everyone is looking for you.”
I took my glasses off and pinched the skin between my eyes. Okay, so the event coordinator hiding out for the entire event wasn’t the best idea.
           I could see that now.
“Yeah,” I said. “Okay.” I got up from the couch and stood, smoothing my UnNatural shirt down.
I began to walk to the door when Easton took hold of my upper arm. The air in the room stood still, the atoms surrounding us moving in slow motion. When my gaze turned to him, I narrowed my eyes. He stared at me for a moment, looking so intensely into my soul, I could almost feel him touching me. And I wasn’t talking about his hand on my arm. Although, his hold on my skin nearly bruised my soul. It was like his powerful stare somehow became tangible. It had fingers. Sensations. It caressed. Teased. Explored. Every inch of me. Too much. Not enough.
His breath hitched and mine did the same as I watched the Adam’s apple in his throat bob. I couldn’t stop gawking at the pulse in his neck and the twitch of his strong jaw. Everything about his gape told me I should pull away from him because this look could change us, but I couldn’t force myself to move. I liked the way he was looking at me. I liked the way it made me feel. I liked that he was finally touching me for the first time with something other than simple friendship in mind. Maybe it wasn’t want. Maybe it was anger. Either way, I liked that it was different.
Is it possible for a touch to say more? Could a simple touch tell me something I’ve wanted to hear for as long as I could remember?
I already knew the answer. His touch could, but there was no way I was going to break contact. We were in a staring contest, and I refused to lose.
Another beat longer, he let go of my arm with a jerk, turned away and left me behind.
I stood there, blinking in the empty space he just occupied.

Author Cassie Graham:

A chocolate mistress, Cassie Graham is a born and raised Arizona girl. Her sass knows no bounds and almost always has something kind to say, no matter the situation. She runs a platform of love and strives to bring those attributes out in every book she writes.

Cassie studied English and literature in college and has an intense love for fairytales. Go figure. Though she loves a good fairytale, she promises to always put her characters through the wringer for that happy ending. She started writing early in her high school career after an English teacher forced her to write in a journal. Four years and thirty-something notebooks full of words later, she found her passion.

Being a hopeless romantic, she found her love for romance after she fell in love at eighteen. Stories became a lot easier to write after she found her soulmate. Love exists and she’s blessed enough to live it every day.

If Cassie isn’t shoulder-deep in writing a version of a fairytale, you can find her front porch sitting with her husband and daughter, eating all the bread, gossiping with her best friends, visiting Disneyland, supporting strong women, listening to cheesy music and reading great books by amazing people. She loves binge watching Supernatural, drooling over Dean, Sam and Cas, and going to conventions. She also enjoys spreading love any chance she can. So, if you run into her, give her a hug or a high-five. She guarantees they’re magic.

Author of Unable to Resist, Anyone But Him, The Truth of a Liar, Enchanting Wilder, Surviving Wilder, The Girl Behind the Red Door and Maybe Ever After.

Miss Devon’s Choice by Sally Britton

Sally Britton is a bestselling indie author, with four historical romance novels. She contributes to the Historical Hussies blog and teaches a young writer’s class at her local library. Sally received her BA in English from Brigham Young University. She’s always read voraciously and eclectically.

Sally started her writing journey at the tender age of fourteen on an electric typewriter and she’s never looked back. Sally lives in Arizona with her crime-fighting husband, four children, and their dog. She loves researching, hiking, and geeking out over her favorite books and movies.

A scarred and lonely viscount and an independent young woman are forced into an arranged marriage. What hope do they have for a happily ever after?
Rebecca Devon lives under the severe eye of her aunt and the iron will of her father. Though she wears what she is told and befriends the people they choose for her, she spends every moment longing to do as she wishes. Knowing freedom will only come through marriage, her hopes for a happy union are stolen away when her father arranges her marriage to a complete stranger.
Christian Hundley, Lord Easton, has learned the hard way that English society won’t accept a person who looks or behaves differently than their ideal. He has hidden himself away from scornful eyes for years, until his aging grandfather takes matters in hand and finds Christian a bride. Knowing he must agree to the marriage, Christian shields his heart. If the whole of society cannot accept him, why should his bride?
Rebecca knows she must have love in her life, but Christian is convinced there is nothing so fraught with danger and pain as entrusting one’s heart to another. Rebecca does everything she can to change his mind, but Christian is determined to remain aloof. Can an arranged marriage ever be anything other than a business partnership?
While this is the fifth book in the Regency romance series, Branches of Love, it can be read as a stand-alone romance.

Q&A With the Author:
·  Tell us about things you enjoy — what you do for fun or personal satisfaction besides writing?
o I have a house full of children, so my favorite thing to do is spend time with them, helping them grow their talents and interests.
·  When did you first realize you were an author?
o I always loved writing and wanted to be an author. But I didn’t realize I could actually do it until 2017 when I met a mom just like me who had already published several books.
·  Have you done anything writing-related, but besides actually writing your books, that seemed to get a lot of positive response? Something that encouraged you?
o This is the craziest thing ever, but I used to write in a historical roleplay game online. I had hundreds of people reading along, not even participating in the game, to see what would happen next. That got me super excited. People liked what I wrote!
·  What is the thing you struggle with the most while writing? And how do you defeat it?
o I really struggle with giving my characters a lot of conflict to overcome. It’s difficult to make life hard on them. But stories need conflict, especially to encourage character growth. My critique partners help me get my work where it needs to be.
·  What is the “message” of your writing? (For example, is your purpose to encourage old-fashioned values, encourage romance, or do you have different purposes in different books?)
o My purpose in my romance novels has been the same for a long time, but I spell it out most clearly in Miss Devon’s Choice. I want to convey the message that I’ve always believed in – love is a choice. It’s not something that happens by accident, or something we have to wait to fall into our laps. We make the choice to love people, to show them that love.
·  Are your characters/stories/scenes, etc. based on anything in real life?
o Sometimes there are little things based on real life. There’s a line in this story about Rebecca cheating based on an incident from my childhood. And Christian’s love for his cousins is how I always felt for mine. Real life inspires all artistic endeavors, after all.
·  What are your future projects?
o I just released a novella as part of a new series called Forever After. I, along with four other incredible historical romance authors, are hoping to build a brand up around this series. I also have one more book to release in the Branches of Love series, and it should be out in May. Finally, I’ll be publishing the first book in a brand new series this spring, too.
