Blackquest 40 by Jeff Bond

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.
Blackquest 40 by Jeff Bond was an interesting book and I loved that the main character is female.  I always love when books like this one have the main characters as females because it isn’t something that happens a lot in the thriller genre.  I was a huge fan of all of the gadgets that Deb had with her at work and I loved that she made them all herself.  I do wish that more authors would write books like this because I think it would make more women want to go into the tech industries.  I really wasn’t the biggest fan of any of the guys that were there running Blackquest and I am sure that is what the author was going for.  I didn’t find that this book was super suspenseful for me and from time to time I did put it down because I would lose interest in it.  I do think that this book would make a good movie because as I was reading this book, I just kept thinking that it reminded me of movies that most people enjoy.  I just keep thinking that it reminded me of “Mission Impossible” but I never did see any of those movies, so I am not sure if that is the best comparison to make. I am pretty sure that if you love action novels with strong female characters that you would enjoy this book.

About The Book

Genre: Thriller Published by: Jeff Bond books Publication Date: May 15th, 2019 Number of Pages: 348 ISBN:9781732255227 Deb Bollinger has no time for corporate training. Her company’s top engineer at just twenty-seven, Deb has blocked off her day for the one project she truly cares about: the launch of Carebnb, an app that finds spare beds for the homeless. When she’s told all employees must drop everything for some busywork exercise called Blackquest 40, it’s an easy no. Trouble is, her bosses aren’t really asking. Blackquest 40 is the mother of all corporate trainings. A near-impossible project to be completed in forty straight hours. No phones. No internet. Sleeping on cots. Nobody in, nobody out. Deb finds the whole setup creepy and authoritarian. When a Carebnb issue necessitates her leaving the office, she heads for the door. What’s the worst that could happen? Armed commandos, HVAC-duct chases, a catastrophic master plan that gets darker by the hour – Blackquest 40 is a fresh take on the Die Hard formula, layering smart-drones and a modern heroine onto the classic action tale.

Praise for Blackquest 40:

“Deb’s first-person narrative is brisk, gleefully snarky, and filled with indelible metaphors… A clever, spirited tale with a brainy, nimble heroine at the helm.” ~ Kirkus Review

“Bond weaves an entertaining story filled with deceit, robots, Russians, and tech entrepreneurs that all combine to give the reader a reason to flip pages furiously to find out what might happen next… BLACKQUEST 40 sparkles with imagination. Code flies from keyboards, setting off ingenious flying devices, hatching plots and subplots and, ultimately, giving heroes the chance to help the good guys win. This book is a delight, and one readers should download right away.” ~ IndieReader’s 5 star review

Death on Clare Island by Martha Geaney

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Pump Up Your Book in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

Death on Clare Island by Martha Geaney was a great book that left me hooked and wanting more.  I do know that I will have to read the other books in this series because I must know how the things end up that didn’t get worked out in this book.  I love when books have things that don’t get wrapped up in the first book, but it also bugs because now I must add this series to my list so I can watch for the next book in this series.  I fell in love with Star right from the start and like I said I can’t wait to see what happens next for her.  Star did remind me of myself because of how she is always pushing forward and looking for the answers to whatever she is looking into.  This was a new author for me and even if I wasn’t going to watch out for the next book, I would watch for any new books by her in the future.  If you love mystery books like I do then, I would pick up a copy of this one and check it out.  If you have read it what did you think of it?

About The Book

Title: DEATH ON CLARE ISLAND (A Star O’Brien Mystery Book 1)
Author: Martha M. Geaney
Publisher: Turlough, Nolan Publishing
Pages: 232
Genre: Mystery

Star O’Brien is a haunting voice for the dead, the missing, and the lost.

Star O’Brien is a successful American information broker who can’t solve the mysteries of her own life. She comes to County Mayo, Ireland to settle her dead lover’s estate and look for her Irish mother who has been missing since Star was six years old. She is on the scene on Clare Island, when a body is discovered. It seems like a closed case involving the island’s dangerous cliffs and drug abuse. Star didn’t believe it when the police dismissed her mother’s disappearance as “abandonment” and she can’t believe the stories she is hearing about the dead young man.

Star must separate truth from fiction in the testimonies of those close to the victim including the head of an anti-drug foundation, a volatile ex-lover, a besotted young art student, and a restorer of the island’s ruins. Before long, Star’s investigation becomes the catalyst for a second murder, and she must work fast to avoid becoming the third victim. As she uncovers the truth about the murders, this fiercely independent, complex, female protagonist must also own up to her own past and a potential future with a charming new confidant.

About The Author

MARTHA M. GEANEY is the author of the highly praised non-fiction, women’s leadership book, Bring Your Spirit to Work: One Woman at a Time. She is also the author of the Star O’Brien fiction series which is set in the west of Ireland, and the United States. Martha was born in New York City but lived in New Jersey beginning at the age of eight. In 2017, Martha and her partner, Bill, moved to Florida where she enjoys cooking, reading, swimming, and her Schipperke puppy, Turlough.

Before turning to indie writing, Martha was a teacher, management consultant, university professor, and the dean of a business college. It was her leadership experience as a management consultant and her research for her doctorate that prompted Martha to write a self-help book for women who aspire to leadership roles.

Martha’s passion for Ireland began when she made her first trip, at the age of four, to County Mayo, birthplace of her mother, and to County Cork, birthplace of her father. She returned to Ireland again at the age of sixteen to attend a boarding school in Castlebar, County Mayo, for two years. Since then, Martha has visited her cousins and friends in Ireland for more than thirty-five years. It is her love for the people, the country, and all its beauty that inspired her to create a mystery and suspense series, set in Ireland, about an amateur detective, Star O’Brien, who is an American.

She is currently working on her second Star O’Brien novel.

Bad Pick by Linda Lovely

Book Review Graphic

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime Book Tours in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

Bad Pick by Linda Lovely is a book that made me laugh out loud as I was reading it. There are other books in this series, and I was able to pick up this book, so you don’t have to read any other books if you don’t want to.  The reason that I found myself laughing out loud was because of the words that Brie would use instead of swearing and that always made me laugh.  One thing I do know is that I am going to read the other books in this series because I fell in love with Brie and I am not ready to say goodbye to her yet.  I loved that this book wasn’t intense because right now this is the type of book that I am wanting to read.  I love reading books that are super intense but there are times where I all I want to do is read a book that is well written but isn’t intense at all.  I knew I was going to love this book when it starts out with goat yoga and crazy religious people thinking they are worshiping the devil.  Right from the first chapter, I was hooked on this story and I kept reading it because I had to know what other crazy things were going to happen.  If you are looking for a new book to read and you love mystery books than I would for sure pick up this book and give it a read.  If you have read this book what did you think of it?

About The Book

Genre: Cozy Mystery Published by: Henery Press Publication Date: April 16, 2019 Number of Pages: 270 ISBN: 9781635114744 Series: Brie Hooker Mystery Series

Vegan Brie Hooker lives and works with her feisty Aunt Eva at Udderly Kidding Dairy, a hop, skip, and jump away from South Carolina’s Clemson University. Brie’s fun farm outreach attempt backfires when religious extremists decide goat yoga is a form of devil worship. Believing one of the zealots might be persuaded to see reason, Brie’s free-wheeling friend Mollye convinces her they should call on the young woman. Big mistake.

Picketers at Udderly’s gates soon become the least of Brie’s troubles. Not only is she accused of murder, she worries the death might actually be her fault. Danger mounts when an old family friend’s visit ensnares Brie in a high-stakes feud between a U.S. Supreme Court nominee and the woman determined to expose his secrets. In her personal life, Brie’s still torn between the town’s two most eligible bachelors. While she’s edging toward a decision, she must first survive a cunning killer adept at crafting murders that look like tragic accidents. Will Brie be another “accident” victim? Pay a visit to Udderly Kidding Dairy and find out!

Praise for Bad Pick

“There’s such a lot to enjoy in Linda Lovely’s third Brie Hooker mystery Bad Pick. Of course, I came for the goat yoga and the religious extremists (I’m only human), but I stayed for the love triangle, the female friendships, the family members rubbing along so realistically, the sidelights on vegan cooking and the rich depiction of small-town life. And what kept me flicking the pages fast enough to cause a draft? The twisty, knotty, killer plot underneath all that charm. Bad Pick is a good un!”—Catriona McPherson, Multi-Award-Winning Author of the Last Ditch Mysteries. “Wow! In Bad Pick, Lovely wrote an amazing novel only to see one part of the plot come to life in headlines all over the country. A fringe religious cult, a Supreme Court nominee, and goat yoga combine together in a tale that fans of mysteries won’t want to miss. –Sherry Harris, Agatha Award Nominee and Author of the Sarah Winston Garage Sale mysteries. “The Brie Hooker mysteries from author Linda Lovely continue to entertain, this time with extremists who really don’t like the farm’s new goat yoga offering. You’ll find yourself muttering, “What the feta?” as you follow the action around not one but two murders from the edge of your seat. Fix yourself a chevre sandwich and sit down to enjoy a delightful – and suspense-filled – read.”—Edith Maxwell, Author of the Local Foods Mysteries and the Quaker Midwife Mysteries.

About The Author

Hundreds of mystery writers have met Linda Lovely at check-in for the annual Writers’ Police Academy, which she helps organize. Lovely finds writing pure fiction isn’t a huge stretch given the years she’s spent penning PR and ad copy. She writes a blend of mystery and humor, chuckling as she plots to “disappear” the types of characters who most annoy her. Quite satisfying plus there’s no need to pester relatives for bail. Her new Brie Hooker Mystery series offers good-natured salutes to both her vegan family doctor and her cheese-addicted kin. Bad Pick is her eighth published mystery novel. She served as president of her local Sisters in Crime chapter for five years and belongs to International Thriller Writers and Romance Writers of America.

And Every Word Is True by Gary McAvoy

Book Review Graphic

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime Book Tours in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

And Every Word Is True by Gary McAvoy was a hard book for me to get through.  I know it was because I haven’t read “In Cold Blood” so I don’t know any of the back story or what that book was about, so I found this book hard for me to understand and get into because I have no idea what that book was about.  He did give a brief synopsis about what it was about, but I did wish that I read that book first. It too me so time to get through this book because I really had to pay attention, so I didn’t get confused or lost as I was reading.  I am going to read the other book and then re-read this book so that it will all make more sense for me.  This book left me wanting to read “In Cold Blood” but it also made me want to look more into the original case because true crime is one of the things that I have loved more and more each year.  If you have read the original book I am sure you would love this book because to really left me wondering what were they trying to hide and I will re-read this book later when I know more of the back story.

Truman Capote’s bestselling book “In Cold Blood” has captivated worldwide audiences for over fifty years. It is a gripping story about the consequences of a trivial robbery gone terribly wrong in a remote village of western Kansas.

But what if robbery was not the motive at all, but something more sinister? And why would the Kansas Bureau of Investigation press the Attorney General to launch a ruthless four-year legal battle to prevent fresh details of the State’s most famous crime from being made public, so many years after the case had been solved?

Based on stunning new details discovered in the personal journals and archives of former KBI Director Harold Nye—and corroborated by letters written by Richard Hickock, one of the killers on Death Row—And Every Word Is True meticulously lays out a vivid and startling new view of the investigation, one that will keep readers on the edge of their seats as they pick up where Capote left off. Even readers new to the story will find themselves drawn into a spellbinding forensic investigation that reads like a thriller, adding new perspectives to the classic tale of an iconic American crime.

Sixty years after news of the 1959 Clutter murders took the world stage, And Every Word Is True pulls back the curtain for a suspenseful encore to the true story of “In Cold Blood.”

Dead in a Week by Andrea Kane

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime Book Tours in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

Dead in a Week by Andrea Kane was a book that left me wondering if things like this really happen today.  I say that because as I was reading it, I could imagine things like this happening and that scares me.  I have no doubt that we live in a world were people would and could do things like this.  I have to say that I couldn’t figure out what was going to happen, and I loved that.  I was on the edge of my seat throughout most of the book because I was never sure what was going to happen next.  I have read several book similar books but this one sticks out to me because it seemed like it could really happen and if I found out tomorrow that they did happen it would shock me.  I fell in love with Abby right from the start she seemed like such a sweet little girl and because of her I fell in love with her dad because of her.  I must respect a man that has a little girl and does that job that Aidan does.  This is the first book that I have read by this author and I can’t wait read more by her because I fell in love with this author after I was done reading this book.  If you are looking for something new to read, I pick up a copy of this book and check it out.

The Buried Girl by Richard Montanari was a book that left me shocked and made me not want to put it down until I was finished with it.  I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book when I read the description, but I am so glad that I did give it a chance because I fell in love with the author and this story.  I can’t wait to read more books by this author in the future because I loved this book.  There were parts where I was able to predict what was going to happen and that wasn’t very often, so it didn’t turn me off while I was reading the book.  There were parts that did shock me and took me by total surprise and that is a rare thing for me because I have read so many books and there are few things that are able to shock me anymore.  I am sure this is one of the reasons that I loved this book as much as I did.  I was able to read this book super quick because of how interested I was in this book.  If you are looking for a great mystery that has will keep you on the edge of your set than I would for sure pick this book up.
