Jesse’s Girl by Tara September

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Audiobookworm in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

Jesse’s Girl by Tara September was a good book but very predictable.  Even though I said that I still really enjoyed this book. I really loved the narrator and that made me want to listen to this book until it was finished.  I am going to add her to my list of people that I love listening to read books. I fell in love with Gwen and I also felt bad for her because of what her husband put her through.  I will never understand why people act the way that they do but I love that this was able to make the characters come to life for me as I was listening. This book was a super quick book to listen to and I was able to listen to the entire book while I was working one day and I loved that.  I also enjoyed this author and I have added her to my list authors to check out in the future.  If you are looking for a sweet contemporary romance book to listen to I would for sure listen to this one.

Release date: Sep. 6, 2019

Successful Texas lawyer, Reade Walker, curses that damn song every time it plays, all too aware of the irony of its lyrics. After all, he has been secretly and painfully enamored with Jesse’s girl, Gwen, for nearly a decade. It was love at first sight for him, but sadly she’s not his girl. She belongs to the one man who betrayed him and knows Reade’s hidden family secret. Yet, Reade can’t seem to love anyone except the one woman he can’t have. Or can he make her mine?

When Gwen Clark’s senator husband runs off with his intern and all their money, the ensuing scandal turns her life upside down. Deserted, penniless, and desperate to provide for her six-year-old daughter, Gwen has no one to turn to but Reade Walker. The one man her heart desperately wants, but her pride dreads having to ask for help. Despite welcoming them into his home, it seems like Reade can barely stand being in the same room with her anymore, let alone under the same roof – in the same bedroom. But Gwen is determined to get her life back on track. It is past time to rediscover her own dreams…if only she can keep her aching heart from breaking all over again.

Zezilia
Suddenly,
I was aware of a new presence on the perimeter of my thoughts. Dropping my
connection with Hadrian, I began erecting the barriers that Selwyn had taught
me, working from my angulus, the center of my consciousness, outward.
Zezilia?
Hadrian’s rich flavor distracted me.
I
wrenched my concentration back to the growing feeling of invasion. It was
stronger than Selwyn’s first trial attack all those months ago, more subtle
too. Whoever it was, he didn’t want me to notice his existence until it was too
late for me do anything about it. By the grace of the Almighty, I had sensed it
early enough.
I
slid the last of my defenses into place just as someone touched my arm. I
paused to raise my eyes. My gaze traced the path from the hand on my arm to
Renato’s concerned face. The invader touched the first of my defenses. When
nothing happened, fear spread through my chest. Renato must have seen it in my
eyes. The invader resumed his advance as Renato’s musky taste filled my mouth.
Are
you alright?

The
attacker bypassed another trap. I knew what I had to do. Shoving away Renato’s
connection, I ConPropped. My Talent senses went blind, but I didn’t need them
to hear the deafening crash from the far end of the room. All eyes went to the
man sprawled among the remains of a table at King Sabine’s feet. Well, all but
Hadrian’s. His gaze immediately found my face. His concern quickly turned to
something more serious as he realized what might have happened. I didn’t dare
risk touching my amoveo just yet. If I awakened my Talent, I would again become
vulnerable, and this time, the enemy would be angry.

I’m a smart-ass with a foul mouth and I don’t take any sh–stuff from anyone. I’ve been through some things that not even my BFF knows about. So, I have only one thing I want from a man, and it isn’t his bank account. Hell, it’s not even his personality. Appendages are all I need. That’s why I hate Micah. He had to go being all NICE. But our time is short. Once we leave Key West, everything stops. It’s for the best. It’s what we both want.
Or is it?

I’ve got no time for women. They require too much attention and if I’m going to build one of the premier bike shops in Manhattan, I can’t afford to waste time with dating. I have goals. That’s why I hate Ang. She’s infuriating, sexy, and complicated. All the things I cannot deal with right now. While we’re in Key West, I’ll indulge. Once we leave Key West, everything stops. That’s what I want.
Right?

Dead Reckoning by Caitlin Rother

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Pump Up Your Book in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

Dead Reckoning by Caitlin Rother was an interesting book.  I realized while I was reading this book that I had heard of this story before but I am not sure where I heard it from.  This was a really well-written book that took me a while to get through because there was so much information that it took a while to finish. I was very impressed with this author and this book.  I felt like I understood all of the characters and why they made the choices that they did but I didn’t support most of the choices that were made. I was left thinking more than once that if one person had made a different choice most of this book never would have happened.  I was left speechless more times than I can even talk about because the characters were always doing or saying insane things. I felt so bad for everyone who got hurt because of Skylar and the choices he made. I also at times felt bad for Skylar because of everything he went through as he was going up but that didn’t give him any right to hurt or even kill other people.  I will never understand why some people who have rough childhood do things as Skylar does and other people don’t end up like this. I hope that this author will write other books in the true crime genre because I really did enjoy this book. If you are looking for a new true crime story to read I would recommend this book to you. Have you heard of this case before and if so what did you think about it?

About The Book

Title: DEAD RECKONING
Author: Caitlin Rother
Publisher: WildBlue Press
Pages: 504
Genre: True Crime

Tom and Jackie Hawks loved their life in retirement, sailing on their yacht, the Well Deserved. But when the birth of a new grandson called them back to Arizona, they put the boat up for sale. Skylar Deleon and his pregnant wife Jennifer showed up as prospective buyers, with their baby in a stroller, and the Hawkses thought they had a deal. Soon after a sea trial and an alleged purchase, however, the older couple disappeared and the Deleons promptly tried to access the Hawkses’ bank accounts.

As police investigated the case, they not only found a third homicide victim with ties to Skylar, they also uncovered an unexpected and unusual motive: Skylar had wanted gender reassignment surgery for years. By killing the Hawkses with a motley crew of assailants and plundering the couple’s assets, the Deleons had planned to clear their $100,000 in debts and still have money for the surgery, which Skylar had already scheduled.

Now, in this up-to-the-minute updated edition, which includes extensive new material, New York Times bestselling author Caitlin Rother presents the latest breaking developments in the case. Skylar, who was ultimately sentenced to death row for the three murders, transitioned to a woman via hormones while living in the psych unit at San Quentin prison. Recently, she legally changed her name and gender to female, apparently a strategic step in her quest to obtain taxpayer-subsidized gender confirmation surgery and transfer to a women’s prison. Combined with Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent moratorium on executions, this only adds insult to injury for the victims’ families, who want Skylar to receive the ultimate punishment for her crimes.

“Rother gives readers compelling insight to an unthinkable American nightmare. A gripping read… frank and frightening… it sizzles.”

Aphrodite Jones, host of True Crime on Investigation Discovery and bestselling author

Speak No Evil by Liana Gardner

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime Book Tours in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

Speak No Evil by Liana Gardner left me feeling very broken because of everything that happened to Melody throughout the book.  I read through this book really quickly because I had to know how it all worked out or if it even did work out at the end. If abuse and things like that bother you then I wouldn’t read this book but if you are okay reading the kind of stuff than I think you might like this book.  Even with me saying that there aren’t a ton of details about the abuse but it does go into a few of the details. I also had a rough childhood so I felt like I could relate to Melody and understand some of the things that she went through. This is the first book I have read by this author and I am pretty sure I will pick up other books by her in the future because I enjoyed this book so much.  I love when an author tackles tough subjects as this author did because it shows that they will talk about things that can help people. If you are looking for a quick but amazing read than I would pick up this book because I am sure you will love it as much as I did.

My name is Melody Fisher. My daddy was a snake handler in Appalachia until Mama died. Though years have passed, I can still hear the rattle before the strike that took her from me.

And it’s all my fault.

Since then, I’ve been passed around from foster home to foster home. I didn’t think anything could be as bad as losing Mama.

I was wrong.

But I will not speak of things people have done to me. Every time I do, worse evil follows. Now, the only thing I trust is what saved me years ago.

Back when I would sing the snakes calm …
