A Message in Poison by BJ Magnani was a good book.  This is the third book in the series and the first one I have read.  I wasn’t lost as I was reading this book, so you don’t have to read all of the books if you don’t want to, but if the series interests you, I would start from the first book and read them in order. I did enjoy this book, but it isn’t a series that I want to read all of the books.  I think I feel that way because there are politics in the story, and I am not the biggest fan of books like this.  I enjoyed the authors writing and the characters in this story.  The author did a great job of giving you the right amount of background info, so you understand what is going on but not so much that you get bored.  This book had a unique plot because, as I have said, this isn’t usually a genre read, and I enjoyed reading something different. I loved that this book had quite a bit of suspense because it kept me reading. After all, I had to know what would happen and how it ended.  I say I didn’t see the ending coming, and I loved that.  If you are looking for something different to read this summer, I would give this series a shot because I am sure you will enjoy it.

Series: A Dr. Lily Robinson Novel, The Art of Secret Poisoning Part 3

Sparks fly as Dr. Lily Robinson-the brilliant academic pathologist and covert assassin for the U.S. Government-investigates two seemingly unrelated deaths alongside her lover, Agent Jean Paul Marchand, and D.C. Medical Examiner Dr. Logan Pelletier.

A U.S. Senator and the president of a developing nation are found dead in their beds. As governments thousands of miles apart react to the fallout and begin their investigations, no one claims responsibility, and no motives are clear. Yet, the cause of death implies a link between the two—one that only a mind versed in poisons and politics can decipher. With her personal relationships teetering on the brink and her loved ones facing foreign threats, Lily must unravel the mystery and uncover a plot more calculating than anyone could imagine—but it may be too late.

A Message in Poison, the third part of the Art of Secret Poisoning trilogy (The Queen of All Poisons and The Power of Poison), continues with twists and turns as Dr. Lily Robinson travels the globe, stares down death, and finds herself at “another crossroad, another choice between life real or imagined…”

The fast-paced action juxtaposes nicely with the personal dilemmas Lily faces as she uncovers a new plot that forces her to reconsider her talents and place in the world.

A Cure For Deceit by Margie Miklas

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Audiobookworm in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

A Cure For Deceit by Margie Miklas was a fantastic book.  I enjoyed everything about this audiobook.  I don’t know that I can even come up with anything bad because I loved this book that much.  I also really enjoyed the narrator of this audiobook.  I felt like her voice fit the characters in this book.  I wouldn’t recommend this book to you if you get grossed out by medical things because this book is full of that.  I loved that about this book because medical stuff has always interested me.  This book combined the two things that I love in books a great medical story and suspense that kept me listening.  I can’t wait to read other books by this author in the future because if her other books are anything like this one, I know I will love them.  The author did a great job explaining things that were happening, but she didn’t include so many details that you get bogged down.  The author also made the characters come to life as I was listening as well.  This book made me wonder if things like this happen in the real world.  I love when an author makes me stop and think about things that happen in the book and wonder if they have ever occurred in the real world.  If you love a good medical thriller, then I am sure you will love this book.

Emergence by Shira Shiloah

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Audiobookworm in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

Emergence by Shira Shiloah was a fascinating read.  I loved that the things that happened in this book could happen.  I am sure these exact things have happened.  I loved that this book could have happened; it makes me want to read it even more. Also, I fell in love with the narrator of this book.  She made all of the characters sound so different that I didn’t have an issue keeping the characters separate.  This is the first time that I have listened to an audiobook where the narrator could make so many different voices with different accents.  This is the first book I have read by this author, and I also fell in love with her.  The author did an excellent job of making the book come to life as I was listening.  I enjoyed the characters in this book because they were all so complex that they seemed real-life people.  I didn’t find that this book was super suspenseful, but it did have enough that I kept listening.  This book makes me not want to have surgery ever because you never know what the doctors do or don’t do when they are operating on you.  I made love about this book because the medical parts of this book were true to what happens, and I loved that.  Because the author is a doctor, she knows how everything works and that came through as I was reading the book.  If you love medical thrillers with a small dose of romance thrown in, I would pick this one up and give it a listen.

A Healthcare System that Fails.

A Whistleblower that Protects Her Patients – No Matter the Costs.

A trusted anesthesiologist, Dr. Roxanne Roth, is healing from the loss of her fiancé by consuming her time with work. It doesn’t hurt that her new love interest, Dr. Justin Kirkland, spends almost as much time at the hospital as she does.

Entranced in the throes and complications of new love, Roxanne looks forward to work every day. Her time at the hospital would almost be cathartic if not for Dr. D. K. Webb, a neurosurgeon, who is quickly amassing a pile of complaints – and bodies.

Despite trying to avoid Webb, Roxanne finds herself working alongside the doctor during a routine, low-risk surgery. Fueled by cocaine and ego, Webb intentionally sabotages the case, leading to the patient dying on the operating table.

Roxanne’s tenuous grip on recovery is shattered with her patient’s death, quickly replaced by anger and a drive for justice. Now Roxanne will do anything to protect her patients from the killer on the other side of the sterile surgical field – before he can silence her as well.

Unnatural by Deven Greene

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Pump Up Your Book in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

Unnatural by Deven Greene was a good book.  I did have a hard time with this book because I couldn’t see anything like this ever happening.  I did love the medical parts of this book because it has always interested me.  I know that this book is fiction, but I still love books that can happen globally, and I just can’t see this book ever happening in the real world.  Other than the fact that this book is unbelievable, I did enjoy the story.  I wonder if things like this happen in the real world, and we just don’t know about it.  Since COVID happened, maybe I am right, and this stuff is happening.    I enjoyed the authors’ writing, and I will check out the other books in this series.  If you love medical thrillers, I would for sure recommend this book to you.

About The Book

Title: UNNATURAL (Erica Rosen MD Trilogy Book 1)
Author: Deven Greene
Publisher: Black Rose Writing

Genre: Medical Thriller

Dr. Erica Rosen is perplexed when she sees a young Chinese girl with blue eyes in her San Francisco pediatrics clinic. The girl’s mother, Ting, is secretive, and Erica suspects she has entered the country illegally. Later, Erica encounters Ting’s son and discovers he has an unusual mutation. Erica learns that Ting’s children underwent embryonic stem cell gene editing as part of a secret Chinese government-run program.

The Chinese government wants to murder Ting’s son to prevent others from learning about his unusual mutation and the secret gene-editing program. At Ting’s urging, Erica heads to China to expose the program and rescue the infant Ting was forced to leave behind, all while attempting to evade the watchful eye of the Chinese government.

PRAISE

A compelling and richly woven story, perfect for those looking for their new favorite thriller!

The UC San Francisco pediatric clinic is a lively and bustling facility where every sort of injury and infirmity has been seen, diagnosed and treated. That is, until the day a Chinese migrant named Ting brings her daughter in for an evaluation. The striking girl is truly an anomaly, bearing genetically impossible bright blue eyes. Dr. Erica Rosen presses Ting for information, but Ting is paranoid, evasive and overly protective of her family’s privacy. Things become more puzzling when Ting ends up in the ER with a wounded young son and insists that someone is trying to kill the boy. Shocking test results, a second attempt on the boy’s life and a missing phlebotomist are just the beginning of a riveting tale of government conspiracy, medical mystery and dangerous close-calls.

Unnatural is a flawlessly written medical thriller that focuses on a Chinese mother who will sacrifice everything to save her children. Erica is a bold protagonist who follows her instincts to some amazing discoveries. The narrative is driven by intelligent dialogue and a clever, yet heinous, plot. The cultural aspects between Ting and Erica feel authentic and the technical medical language is just complicated enough to feel genuine without becoming difficult to read. Deven Greene has created a truly gripping international thriller with just the right amount of humanity and compassion.  Unnatural, the first in the Erica Rosen MD Trilogy, is a compelling and richly woven story, perfect for those looking for a new favorite thriller!
