PERSONAL THOUGHTS

The Ornery Gene by Warren C Embree

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime Book Tours  in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

The Ornery Gene by Warren C Embree wasn’t my favorite book but I did enjoy it.  This book did have a good amount of suspense in the book which I did enjoy. It has been quite a long time since I have read any book that has to do with cowboys and a good mystery.  I didn’t hate any of the characters but I also wasn’t the biggest fan of any of them either. I did feel like some parts of the book were really long-winded and yet other parts seemed to be rushed.  I did like that each chapter had the date and time that the chapters took place because it made it super easy to follow along and understand the time frame. I liked this because it was interesting to see how quickly things happened.  I always am left wondering if something like this could really happen and in this case, I could see it actually happening. I wasn’t super shocked with the outcome of this book but because I was able to figure out most of what happened but there were a few things that I didn’t figure out which was a nice.  If you are looking for a mystery book that is a quick read I would give this book a shot.

The Kings Trail by M.L. Farb

By day Yosyph appears nothing more than a mute
tavern-hand. By night he is the shadowy leader of a growing revolution.

When he learns that thousands of his people will be
sent as slaves to the mines, he must choose—fight the royal army with an
ill-prepared rebellion or journey to the land of his ancestors through the
deadly King’s Trial, where he hopes to win the help of his kin.
His journey grows complicated when he rescues a
maiden and enrages a prince, but if he doesn’t return with help in time, the
people he’s loved and secretly served will be gone.

As a youth, I made up stories to help my little
sisters go to sleep. It backfired. We stayed up for hours continuing the tale.
The King’s Trial was born in those late, whispered nights.

Ever since I climbed up to the rafters of our barn
at age four, I’ve lived high adventure: scuba diving, mud football with my
brothers, rappelling, and even riding a retired racehorse at full
gallop—bareback. I love the thrill and joy.
Stories give me a similar thrill and joy. I love
living through the eyes and heart of a hero who faces his internal demons and
the heroine who fights her way free instead of waiting to be saved. I read
fiction and true-story adventure. I write both, though I’m starting with
publishing the fiction—fact will come later.

I create high fantasy, fairy tale retellings, and
poetry. I live a joyful adventure with my husband and six children. I am a
Christian and I love my Savior.

Top Ten List

  1. As a child, I couldn’t walk across a room. I danced, spun, skipped, ran, or otherwise moved, but I couldn’t just walk.
  2. I took calculus at a community college at age 14. I planned to go to MIT and become an astronaut. Plans changed—in wonderful ways.
  1. I love reading to my children. We’ve enjoyed books from Dr. Seuss to Les Misérables. Maniac Magee is one of our favorites.
  2. I lived in St Petersburg, Russia for half-a-year teaching English to kindergartners. I learned to wash my clothes in a bathtub, filter and boil my drinking water, and love my sweet, crayon-eating, kids.
  3. I have slight dyslexia. ‘b’ and ‘p’ sometimes flip flop on me. But it also means I can read a book upside-down.

  4. I love climbing, rappelling, and horseback riding. But I hate roller coasters and bungee jumping.
  1. I’ve journaled almost every day since I turned seventeen. I capture conversations, descriptions, happenings, and quotes. I explore ideas. Through the years I’ve written well over a million words. It prepared me to become an author.
  2. Plumbing Repair is my nemesis. I’m grateful I don’t have to battle it very often. In the end, I always win, but I feel like I’ve fought an archvillain who pulled every dirty trick in the book, including Chinese water torture in claustrophobic conditions.
  1. I live with a vivid imagination. I dream in 3-D, technicolor, and occasionally with my eyes open. This is a bane when it comes to nightmares. I will not watch horror movies.
  2. The King’s Trial started as a bedtime tale I told my little sisters twenty years ago. Don’t worry. I wrote the second book, The King’s Shadow, in six months, and it will come out this autumn.

Plus an extra: I have an accent. People often ask me where I’m from. Maybe it’s my reader accent. I’ve read out-loud enough different books in character, that perhaps it stuck.

Eye For Eye by J.K. Franco

Book Review Graphic

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime Book Reviews in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

Eye For Eye by J.K. Franco was an amazing read. It has been awhile since I have read a book that kept me guessing right up until the end.  There were so many questions right from the start and that made me want to keep reading. This is the first book in the series and I know without a doubt that I will be reading the other books as soon as they are released.  I loved that I could understand why they were making the choices even though I didn’t agree with the things they were doing. I did love all the work that Roy did when he was researching how someone could get away with murder and it left me wondering if the things he planned would actually work in the real world.  I can’t say enough good things about this book and the author. I can’t wait to read more by this author because this author is one of my favorites.

As the bodies accumulate, secrets are revealed and alliances crumble. Ultimate survival depends on following the rules for a perfect murder. And the first rule is… leave no singing bones.

About The Author

J.K. FRANKO was born and raised in Texas. His Cuban-American parents agreed there were only three acceptable options for a male child: doctor, lawyer, and architect. After a disastrous first year of college pre-Med, he ended up getting a BA in philosophy (not acceptable), then he went to law school (salvaging the family name) and spent many years climbing the big law firm ladder. After ten years, he decided that law and family life weren’t compatible. He went back to school where he got an MBA and pursued a Ph.D. He left law for corporate America, with long stints in Europe and Asia. His passion was always to be a writer. After publishing a number of non-fiction works, thousands of hours writing, and seven or eight abandoned fictional works over the course of eighteen years, EYE FOR EYE became his first published novel. J.K. Franko now lives with his wife and children in Florida.

Cade wiped his fingers on a napkin and took another big bite. I loved watching his obvious pleasure in my baking. There was something so sensual about the way he enjoyed eating my desserts.

“I should be mad at you, you know.” He eyed the brownies in the display case with a hopeful expression, so I got him another one and added it to his plate while he downed his glass of milk.
“Why would you be mad at me? I bake good brownies and have nice boobs, remember?” I topped off his milk with a smile.

“That’s exactly why. I’m adding an extra two miles to my daily run to make up for all this good eating, and I’ve been suffering from UHO’s for days.” He took another greedy bite of brownie.

“What is a UHO?” I frowned and put my chin in my hand, studying him. “Should I be worried?”

“An Unexpected Hard On.” Cade delivered that line with a perfectly straight face, but I snorted with laughter and shook my head at him.

“Don’t laugh, missy. You try meeting with clients while having stray thoughts about the hot baker girl down the street. Then deal with the fallout. I’ve had three meetings where I had to hold my notepad in my lap to cover up the evidence.” He picked a brownie crumb off his shirt.

“I’m so sorry for your inconvenience.” I tried for a straight face to match his but failed miserably.

“Don’t be sorry. I know a good remedy for UHO’s. I’ll be soliciting your help with that at some point.” He licked his lips in anticipation, and I shivered.

Cade noticed my shiver, and his grin got wider. “Now about karaoke night. It’s tonight, actually.”

“Really? I thought it was a weekend thing.” I took his empty plate and put it in the dishwasher.

“I think it usually is, but when I asked the manager at Maude’s about it, he said come tonight, and he would get us set up. I’m noticing things are pretty informal at Maude’s.” He drank his milk in three big swallows, and I watched his throat work with interest.

Why was that so sexy?

And it was even sexier when he came around the counter and rinsed his glass before placing it in the dishwasher, too.

I appreciated a man with a sexy body, but one who knew how to clean up after himself? That’s what really made me weak in the knees. At this rate, if he started washing dishes by hand, I might have no choice but to strip naked for him.

Cade pulled me close and nuzzled my hair. I buried my nose in his chest and inhaled his manly scent. And we stayed that way for several long minutes, just enjoying a full body hug.

This was bliss.

An Eye for a Lie by Cy Wyss

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime Book Tours in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

An Eye for a Lie by Cy Wyss was an interesting book but I did have trouble staying interested during the first couple of chapters. One thing I did like was that one of the main characters was a female FBI agent.  I always love when authors make strong females as lead characters. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Richter throughout the entire book but by the end of the book, I didn’t hate him as much.  I didn’t find this book was super suspenseful but it did have enough that I want to keep reading once I was a couple chapter’s into the book. This is the first book that I have read by this author and if I am honest I will probably pick up another book by this author in the future.   I did love that this book had some sci-fi elements in it because sci-fi isn’t a genre that I usually read so it was nice to read a book that was different from what I usually read. It is always nice to read a book that combines different genres because it makes it hard for me to figure out what is going to happen before it actually does happen.  If you are looking for a different type of thriller to read this summer I would give this book a chance. What books are you reading this summer?

About The Book

Genre: Mystery Published by: Nighttime Dog Press, LLC Publication Date: May 27, 2019 Number of Pages: 258 ISBN: 978-0-9965465-3-9

Lukas Richter is a San Francisco police detective with a cybernetic eye and heightened senses. He can detect the same autonomous responses as a polygraph machine, so he has a leg up in determining guilt.

In An Eye for a Lie, his first full-length novel, Richter is accused of murder and the evidence seems incontrovertible, including a bullet that was somehow fired from his gun when he claims he was nowhere near the crime scene. In the background, San Francisco is aflame over Richter’s shooting of an unarmed Asian man, an incident some are calling “the Asian Ferguson.”

Can Inspector Richter convince a plucky and suspicious FBI agent of his innocence in the face of overwhelming accusations and public persecution?
