The Shadow of Atlantis by Wendy Leighton-Porter

A graduate of Exeter University in the early 1980s, I spent 20 years as a teacher of French, Latin and Classical studies, before a change of career led me to writing children’s fiction. Currently residing in Abu Dhabi, I live with my husband and our beautiful Tonkinese cat.

The Shadow of Atlantis is the first in a series of time-travel adventures, featuring 3 children and a rather special cat called Max. I’m now working on the 17th book, The Shadow of the Great Fire. The series also includes several novellas that feature Max the talking Tonkinese cat undertaking solo adventures. As I take my young readers on a magical mystery tour through the past, I’m hoping that my love of history, myth and legend will rub off on them too.
Ten-year-old twins Jemima and Joe Lancelot have no idea why their parents have disappeared, but a mysterious old book belonging to their father holds the answer … and so begins a quest to uncover the truth.

Together with Max their Tonkinese cat, and Charlie from next door, the children embark on an epic adventure, travelling back in time to the lost city of Atlantis, unaware of the dangers that await them.

Can they save the people of Atlantis from the disaster which is about to destroy their land forever? And will they find their way back to the safety of their own time before it’s too late?

The Shadows from the Past time-travel adventures for Middle Grade readers take place over the course of the school summer holidays. The Shadow of Atlantis is the first book in the series and this is where it all begins. As the mystery unfolds, my young heroes embark on a magical journey into the past and a quest to unlock the secrets of an old book that is a gateway into the pages of history.
Snippet:
Jemima glanced at the cat and then back at the charm in her hand. Somehow, she instinctively knew what he wanted her to do. ‘Okay, Max, but you mustn’t lose this, whatever you do.’ He sat proudly while she attached the golden owl to his collar.
At once, in a soft voice, they heard him say, ‘Well, it took you long enough to figure that one out.’
The children all gasped, staring at the large cat in disbelief.

The Pinebox Vendetta by Jeff Bond

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime Book Tours in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

The Pinebox Vendetta by Jeff Bond was a good book but it did take me a couple of chapters to hook me.  Once I was hook though I was able to read through this book pretty quickly and I always love books that I can get through pretty quick.  This book did keep me guessing through most of the book is always a great thing because it keeps me interested and keeps me reading because I have to know how the story ends.  I really enjoyed the author and his writing throughout this book.  It was a slow starter like I said so this is one that you have to stick out a few slow chapters but once it picks up it doesn’t slow down until you are done with the book.  In the end, I loved Sam but at times she did get on my nerves because I just wanted her to say what she was thinking more than she did.  If you love a good thriller then I would check this one out and if you have read it what did you think of it?

About The Book

Genre: Thriller
Published by: Jeff Bond Books
Publication Date: February 19th 2020
Number of Pages: 264
ISBN: 1732255253 (ISBN13: 9781732255258)
Series: Pruitt-Gallagher Saga, #1

From the author of The Winner Maker and Blackquest 40 comes The Pinebox Vendetta: a genre-bending thriller that combines a love story, cold-case murder mystery, and political blood feud — told over the course of a single breathless weekend.

The Gallaghers and Pruitts have dominated the American political landscape dating back to Revolutionary times. The Yale University class of 1996 had one of each, and as the twenty-year reunion approaches, the families are on a collision course.

Owen Gallagher is coasting to the Democratic nomination for president.

Rock Pruitt — the brash maverick whose career was derailed two decades ago by his association to a tragic death — is back, ready to reclaim the mantle of clan leader.

And fatefully in between lies Samantha Lessing. Sam arrives at reunion weekend lugging a rotten marriage, dumb hope, and a portable audio recorder she’ll use for a public radio-style documentary on the Pruitt-Gallagher rivalry — widely known as the pinebox vendetta.

What Sam uncovers will thrust her into the middle of the ancient feud, upending presidential politics and changing the trajectory of one clan forever.

The Pinebox Vendetta is the first entry in the Pruitt-Gallagher saga: a series that promises cutthroat plots, power grabs, and unforgettable characters stretched to their very limits by the same ideological forces that roil America today.

The Secret of the Sacred Scarab by Fiona Ingram

I am a children’s author, but up until a few years ago, I was a journalist and editor. Something rather unexpected sparked my new career as an author—a family trip to Egypt with my mother and two young nephews. We had a great time and I thought I’d write them a short story as a different kind of souvenir…. Well, one book and a planned book series later, I had changed careers. I have now published Book 3 (The Temple of the Crystal Timekeeper) in my MG adventure series Chronicles of the Stone, with many awards for the first book, The Secret of the Sacred Scarab, and a few for Book 2, The Search for the Stone of Excalibur, and one already for Book 3! I also teach online novel writing for aspiring authors and I find that very satisfying. Relaxation time finds me enjoying something creative or artistic, music, books, theatre or ballet. I love doing research for my book series. I love animals and have written two animal rescue stories. I have two adorable (naughty) little dogs called Chloe and Pumpkin, and a beautiful black cat called Bertie.

In this exciting Middle Grade adventure set in Egypt, a 5000-year-old mystery comes to life. A scruffy peddler gives Adam and Justin Sinclair an old Egyptian scarab on their very first day in Egypt. Only when the evil Dr. Faisal Khalid shows a particular interest in the cousins and their scarab, do the boys realise they are in terrible danger. Dr. Khalid wants the relic at all costs. Justin and Adam embark upon the adventure of a lifetime, taking them down the Nile and across the harsh desert in their search for the legendary tomb of the Scarab King, an ancient Egyptian ruler. They are plunged into a whirlpool of hazardous and mysterious events when Dr. Khalid kidnaps them. They learn more about the ancient Seven Stones of Power and the mysterious Shemsu-Hor. They must translate the hieroglyphic clues on the underside of the scarab, as well as rescue the missing archaeologist James Kinnaird, and their friend, the Egyptologist Ebrahim Faza, before time runs out!
Snippet:
Dr. Khalid leaped into the shadowy chamber, dragging Adam. Then he tripped, pulling Adam down as he fell. They crashed into each other, landing in a heap. The flashlight rolled across the floor. The crystal walls caught and magnified the beam, setting the huge chamber ablaze with light. Aziz yanked Laila into the chamber and threw her face down onto the floor. Then he ran back to fetch the lamp he had left on the last stepping-stone. Adam looked up. Just inside the doors stood two colossal statues that seemed to be striding forward. They each had the body of a man and the head of an ibis, with glittering eyes and fierce, curved beaks. They held raised spears, as if ready to stab any intruder. Adam gasped. They were more terrifying than the ones in his dream. The lamplight shone on the carved faces and threw eerie shadows against the wall behind the figures, making them appear bigger than they were.

Guinever: The Legend by Cheryl Carpinello

I’m a retired high school English teacher. A devourer of books growing up, my profession introduced me to writings and authors from times long past. Through my studies and teaching, I fell in love with the Ancient and Medieval Worlds. Now, I hope to inspire young readers and those Young-at-Heart to read more through my Tales and Legends for Reluctant Readers set in these worlds—Ancient Egypt, Medieval Wales, and coming soon, a hair-raising adventure through ancient worlds in search of 5 rare Phoenix Feathers.

All of my books come with Free study guides and/or extensive Back-of-the-Book materials.

My husband and I love to travel. In 2008, we spent three weeks in Egypt traveling by local train from one end of the country to the other; in 2014, we spent three weeks in the UK driving over 1700 miles through England, Wales, and Scotland; and in 2016, we spent a week in Iceland. We’ve also traveled to Mexico, Jamaica, and Aruba. Our next big adventure will be to Greece and Italy.

When I’m not writing or traveling, our 4 grandkids keep us busy.

Snippet:
Believing in someone takes monumental effort at the best of times. In the worst of times, it can mean the difference between life and death.
Cedwyn called the littl’uns over, motioning them to sit. Inspecting them, he decided that apart from a few bruises, they had come through okay. Their clothes were ripped and torn. Scratches and blood showed on most of their arms. The fear in their eyes as they watched him tugged at his heart, but there was hope also in those trusting eyes. Hope and belief that he, Cedwyn, would save them.
Exhausted, he explained what would happen. “Tomorrow we leave here. Wherever they’re taking us, it’s a two-day journey. From there, I don’t know.”
“But Cedwyn, what’s going to happen to us?” Crystin asked, her sweet face now streaked with dirt and traces of vomit.
Cedwyn took a deep breath before answering. “I think they are planning to sell us as slaves.”
Gasps greeted his words. John whimpered.
“Will we still be together?” Edwyn asked.
All of them drew in a breath as they waited for his answer.
“Yes,” Cedwyn said, hoping they didn’t realize his lie. “I’ve made that clear to them. I’ll make sure of it.”
They all exhaled at once.
“For now, I want you to eat whatever they bring us and drink water. In the morning, don’t eat or drink a lot. Food and water in your stomach won’t sit well during the wagon journey.” He locked eyes with each one to be sure they understood. “Rest tonight. It will be easier now that the ground doesn’t move. Doubt we’ll be able to sleep much in the wagon. Don’t count on stopping either. I think they want to get rid of us as quick as they can.”
“Cedwyn,” Elen raised her hand. “When will Guinevere rescue us?”
“Shh. You mustn’t say her name ever again. They can’t know.” His eyes shot furtively around to make sure neither of the renegades was close enough to hear. “She’ll be here as soon as she can. But don’t mention her again. They can’t know she’s coming.”
Five heads bobbed vigorously.
“Hey, you little snots. If you want to somethin’ to eat, you best get over here now, or I’m gonna throw it out.” Ulf laughed enjoying his humor.
“Go,” Cedwyn said, “and remember what I said.”
Needing no further encouragement, the littl’uns jumped up and ran to get the food. One by one they came back and sat in a small circle by Cedwyn. Each carried a chunk of bread and thick slice of cheese. Owain brought back a bucket of water and a scoop. Elen handed Cedwyn his portion of bread and cheese before sitting next to him. Silence prevailed as they devoured the slim meal and took turns with the water scoop.
With their hunger lessened, they lay down and fell into a deep sleep, exhausted by the day’s ordeal. Cedwyn watched over them until he nodded off to a restless sleep.
Cedwyn stood and stretched his stiff muscles. Stoking his face, he winced as he felt the scab that had formed overnight on the side of his lip. When he took his hand away, it was stained with blood. The wound still oozed. The time will come when he will pay for this, both of them for all of this. Turning toward the sea, he sent a silent plea to Guinevere. Come quick, Guin’ver. Come quick.
