A Texan Goes to Nirvana by Kelly Jackson

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Audiobookworm in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

A Texan Goes to Nirvana by Kelly Jackson took me a few chapters to get into but once I was hooked I listen to the rest of it pretty quickly.  I loved that the author narrated her own book because it makes it seem like the actual characters are doing the talking. I liked Wendy right from the start of the book.  She always left me with a smile on my face as I was listening to this book. I also loved that she was a place in order to become a yoga instructor but she still smokes and drinks in secret throughout the entire book.  She was always saying or doing something that left me smiling as I was listening. I also loved all of the characters that she met as she was going along. There was a small mystery aspect to this book but it was secondary to the story it was just enough to keep me interested to not to over the top like some of the other books that I have read.  I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something that will leave you smiling when the book is finished. It also was only just over 4 hours so I was able to get through it in just a couple of days.

Yoga has finally come off her high horse to reveal doubters, sufferers, and cynics. This is the story of one woman’s comic misadventures at the ashram from hell.

Wendy Tate finds herself at a yoga ashram for teacher training, which sounds like a nice, new adventure to her. She’ll have to put on a nicotine patch and give up her daily 5 pm martini. Pish Posh. What could happen? Little does she know, there are characters in and out of the ashram that turn her goals inside out, but she gets to keep her healthy skepticism.

About The Author

Kelly Jackson

Kelly Jackson is a SAG/AFTRA-affiliated actor and comedienne, and as such, she loves idealizing characters in the books that she narrates.  Kelly and her sister are also bloggers known as The Midlife Gals Gone Gray. That’s how this whole thing got started. They choose a topic and then annihilate it through two hilariously disparate points of view.  Kelly wrote a book, A Texan Goes to Nirvana, and wanted to narrate it herself. That’s how that got started. When not writing and narrating, Kelly has a ‘death grip on the control panel’ as a Senior Executive Assistant/Girl Friday to CEOs.  Although a Texan by birth, Kelly and her sister live in Hawaii and enjoy a regular yoga practice, movies, swimming and oddbody watching at nearby beaches. Aloha! Proud member of SAG/AFTRA

The Gateway

The words of Tamilane’s journal drifted through Sullyan’s mind as she cast loose her hold on her consciousness and sank deeper into her psyche. The twists, spirals, and helixes of her vast and intricate pattern glowed and flared and looped around her, binding her closer and closer with those whose life forces she drew on to empower this uncertain endeavor. She hid her doubt from them as she tried to hide it from herself. She had to believe she could save her friends or she was defeated before she had begun. Using her anger and despair at their suffering, she bolstered her weakened spirit, drifting further into her metaforce and calming her fears.

There was only one method she knew that might help her attain her goal, and she felt for the strains of her soul song as she let herself float far out of time. The ancient, haunting melody came instantly to her mind—familiar, comforting, and strangely powerful as it twined through her being. Yet the refrain itself was not sufficient to afford her access through the Gateway. She had known that from the beginning, when she first conceived this tentative plan. The words of the long-dead Tamilane had planted this idea in her mind, an idea that had taken root and developed during her sleeping hours a day and a half ago. She needed information in order to pass the Gateway into the realm beyond the Void, and a guide to aid her after that, to help her find the souls that were lost.

Whether she would be able—or permitted—to return with them once she had taken that step was irrelevant. She was quite prepared to give up her life in order to see them returned to theirs. She had a unique link to one of the spirits residing in that realm and hoped with all her being that her father could be her guide. Why else had he striven so hard to contact her?

It was not the first time they had spoken. She had met his shade three years earlier, while giving birth to his namesake. He was surely the most natural choice to be her guide, and he would recognize the words he had made, so she opened her soul to the words of the song, the expression of love her father had penned, and flung them out like an invitation, begging him to respond.

Spirit rise up and join all these as one

The core of our being, of all that we are

The source of all loving, the hearts labors done

When two spirits join, when two souls sing one song.

Don’t Must Love Coffee by Leigh Lennon from the first season of 425 Madison Ave.

“This book was a total feel-good romance. Gwen and Leo hit it off right from the begging and I really loved how the story is not just about them, their kids, all three of them get a bit of a spotlight and help the story move forward. Even the judge was a great addition to the story.” —Amazon Reviewer
