Married to the enemy

When Keira O’Malley was a child, she used to picture her perfect wedding. The flowers. The dress. Her husband. But nothing could have prepared her for saying “I do” to Dmitri Romanov-cold, domineering, and always one step ahead of everyone else in the ever-shifting power plays of New York City. She agreed to his bargain to secure peace for her family, and she may want the bastard more than she’d ever admit, but she’ll be damned if she’ll make this marriage easy for him.

Dmitri knows better than to underestimate Keira for one second. Molten desire smolders between them, a dangerous addiction neither can resist. But his enemies are already on the move, and he needs every ounce of his legendary focus and control to keep them alive. It wasn’t until the front door closed behind Ivan that the reality of her situation sank in. Dmitri was furious. He might have faked it for his friend, but he stood next to her, a pillar of stone with anger coming off him in waves. His grip on her elbow didn’t hurt, but if she’d tried to leave, he would have restrained her.

She should be afraid. She should be terrified.

Keira’s heartbeat picked up, adrenaline kicking in. She swung to face him with a fierce smile on her face. “You didn’t compliment me on my dress.” It was a work of fucking art. She smoothed her free hand over her hip and up her side. “Actually, you called me a high-class sex worker. Is that any way to speak to your beloved wife?”

His gray eyes followed the movement, a muscle ticking in his jaw when she cupped her breast. “I meant it when I said you’re playing with fire.”

That wasn’t just anger on his face now. No, it was rapidly being overtaken by sheer lust. An answering feeling sent a bolt straight to her core. She stepped back, and he released her instantly. A strange feeling coursed through her, straightening her spine and making her want to laugh out loud. Power. This is what power feels like.

He wanted her. He wanted her so badly, he had his hands clenched at his sides to keep from touching her again. But he wouldn’t until she gave the green light. Keira took another step back. “I have a hypothetical question.”

“Ask.” His voice was rough. The way he watched her made her feel like prey, and she liked it far more than she should—because she wasn’t prey. Keira had her own teeth and claws, and Dmitri would learn that as time went on.

“Hypothetical, if I said yes tonight…how do you imagine that would go?”

He stared at her a long moment. “Nyet. I’m not playing this game with you.” She blinked and he was on her, one hand snaking around to press against the exposed small of her back, the other tangling in her hair. “We are not children, moya koroleva. These games don’t become us.”

He kissed her. There was no cautious exploration or easing into it. Dmitri kissed her like a conquering warlord who was sure of his welcome because he owned everything in the room—including her. There was no fighting this. She didn’t even want to try. Keira slid her arms around his neck and pressed herself more firmly against him. His cock was a hard length with too many layers between them. She rolled her hips, an invitation she wasn’t sure she was ready to follow through on.

Dmitri slid his hand down to cup her ass, guiding her movements. Long slides up the length of his cock and back down again. The stupid goddamn dress kept her from spreading her legs wider, from getting him exactly where she needed him. Her nipples rubbed against his shirt, the silk incredibly decadent across her sensitized skin.

“Keira. Moya koroleva.” He kissed down her jawline, tilting her head back until she had to arch her spine to accommodate the position. “Did you enjoy their eyes on you? Ivan’s. The men who owe allegiance to me. Anyone who cared to look.”

It took her desire-drugged brain a beat to catch up, but by then he was already growling out more words against her skin. “Did it make you feel powerful to know they were imagining stroking the nipples you flash with such impunity?” He moved his hand from her ass to do exactly that, dragging a finger over her puckered nipple. “They wanted the body you so proudly put on display.” His voice roughened. “They wanted what’s mine.”

Say something. If you don’t say something right now, you’re going to give in tonight and then it will all be over.

He moved his hand to her back and bent her until she relied solely on his strength to keep her off the ground. And then Dmitri’s wicked, wicked mouth closed around her nipple. The weight of the beaded design seemed heavier with his tongue flicking the engorged bud, making his touch that much hotter. She couldn’t hold back a moan as he moved to her other breast.

Dmitri dragged his mouth up the center of her chest, the only part of her not caged in the dress, stopping at the thick collar. He flicked the hollow of her throat with his tongue. “This is my favorite part of the dress.” He ran his thumb over it. “This, more than anything else, marks you as mine.”

A collar for a kept pet.

It was as if he’d doused her in icy water. Keira went rigid and shoved Dmitri away. She almost fell when he released her, but she regained her balance at the last second. They stood mere feet apart, breathing hard and staring at each other. I am no one’s pet. She slashed her hand through the air. “I might be your wife, Russian, but I’m not yours. I’ll never be yours.”

Excerpt:

She narrowed her eyes even more and gave him a cool glare. “You might as well just admit it. I know exactly what happened.”

He groaned softly. “All right. Fine. I couldn’t believe you’d be acting like… like that.”

“Like what?”

She was making this as hard as possible for him, and he couldn’t even blame her. “Like you… liked me.” It sounded ridiculous, immature, but he couldn’t think of any other way to put it.

“And you really can’t believe that I do?”

He wanted to be anywhere but here, put on the spot like this. He wanted to get up and leave, somehow escape everything he was feeling.

But, if he did, that would be it. He’d never have Carol in his life again. He might have messed this up completely, but he wasn’t prepared to lose her for good. So he told her the truth. “No. I really can’t.”

“Why the hell not?”

Carol almost never used to rough language—even something as mild as “hell.” It seemed to emphasize how upset she really was.

“I… I don’t even know.”

She stared at him for a full minute. He could see her chest rise and fall with her heaving breathing. Then she finally got up, muttering, “You’re a real idiot sometimes. You know that, right?” She went to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator.

He hauled himself to his feet and followed her. “I know I’m an idiot. I know that. But I’m still here, trying to fix things.”

She was staring into her open refrigerator, like she’d forgotten what she’d come here for.

“Carol,” he said, touching her shoulder gently. She looked so hurt and wounded. He couldn’t believe he was important enough to her to make her feel this way.

She whirled around to face him. “Why shouldn’t I like you?” she demanded.

He blinked. “Because… because it seems pretty obvious that it’s just because the others have gotten together.”

“What does that even mean?”

“I mean Emma and Noah got together, and then Ginny and Ryan got together. So now we’re the only two left. I get it. I do. It would make sense for us to get paired up in the same way. But that doesn’t mean it’s… it’s real.”

She made a loud, throaty sound of naked frustration.

Patrick contorted his face as he was washed with self-consciousness and confusion. “I’m trying to be honest here.”

“I know you are. I know you are!”

She closed the refrigerator, having taken nothing out. “Why wouldn’t we be good together?”

“We’re totally different. If I wasn’t the last guy left in our little group, you’d choose someone totally different.” He knew this much for sure. He’d been rehearsing it over and over again—for months now—reminding himself that any soft looks she’d given him had been based on something other than real attraction.

“How do you know that?”

“Carol, please. I know I act stupid sometimes, but I do have a functioning mind. And neither one of us deserves to be stuck with… whoever happens to be left.”

She gaped at him. Literally gaped. Then her cheeks paled even more. “You think I’m… just whoever happens to be left.”

“Not you,” he gasped, shocked that she’d ever even imagine he felt that way. “Not you. Me. I’m whoever is left.”

“You… you… you…” She was panting, couldn’t even get the words out.

“Me what?”

“You idiot!

He was processing her uncontrolled outburst and so he wasn’t prepared for what she did next.

What she did was launch herself at him, grabbing his head and pulling it down into a kiss.

Since he wasn’t prepared, he couldn’t control his response. And he’d been wanting her too much, for too long, and not letting himself act on that desire.

So he didn’t stop it, even though he knew he should.

He didn’t push her away gently and explain that it couldn’t happen.

He kissed her back.

Excerpt

Noah felt an emotional pull toward her, that she seemed to understand him so well, even when he wasn’t sure he understood himself.

But he shouldn’t—he really shouldn’t—be feeling that way.

He cleared his throat. “And I noticed your Man-Fast flew out the window.”

She gasped and straightened her spine, which unfortunately called attention to the curve of her breasts. “What are you talking about?”

Struggling not to gaze too fixedly on the slight outline of nipple he could see beneath the white fabric of her dress, he managed to say, “Your Man-Fast. With all the flirting you were doing, I figured you’d given up on it.”

“I was not flirting!”

He lifted his eyebrows.

“Don’t you give me that snide look,” she said, her lush lips turning down in a frown. “I was talking to some people I know, same as you.”

“There was definitely more than talking going on over here.” He had no idea why he was pursuing this. It was stupid. Futile. It would just make things worse.

But he’d been bristling for too long about all the guys falling over themselves around her, and it was going to come out one way or the other.

“What are you talking about?” she demanded. “I didn’t do anything but talk.”

“Right. You didn’t smile at them and show them all that skin and make them think they might be getting lucky later on.”

She gasped again. “I did nothing of the kind.”

“Okay.”

“I didn’t! I was talking. A girl can talk to guys without being accused of leading them on. I could say the same thing about you—every time you talk to and smile at women.”

“I haven’t been talking to women tonight.”

“You talked to a few.”

He tried to remember back to the people he’d chatted with and only remembered two young women. “They were married. I knew them from high school.”

“So? What’s your point? You can flirt with married women, you know.”

“Are you saying you think I’m the kind of guy who would do that?” His voice was now as angry as hers was.

She opened her mouth with some sort of sharp reply, but she must have rethought it. She slumped slightly. “No. I know you’re not.”

“Good.”

“It would be nice if you’d know I wasn’t like that either.”

“I’d never think you’d come on to married men.”

“You just think I’m some kind of tease, torturing men for fun.”

Noah sighed and leaned against the counter. “No. I really don’t.”

“Then why were you acting like that then?”

Good question.

And a question he couldn’t possibly answer honestly.

“I was just being an ass.”

“Yes. You were.”

“Sorry.”

Her frown was relaxing slightly, and she was peering at him closely. “Okay then.”

“Okay?”

“Yes. Okay.”

He felt a little better, now that she wasn’t so mad at him. But it just made him want to touch her even more.

He really needed to get out of here.

“I already have an older brother,” she said, still scrutinizing his face. “I don’t need another one.”

Damn it.

She thought he was acting like an older brother.

She had no idea he felt like a jealous boyfriend, resenting the fact that any other guy was thinking about what was his.

Could things be any more of a mess for him?

Excerpt:

“Hey, boss. What’s up?”

He steepled his hands on his desk and peered at her with his dreamy hazel eyes.

Damn. Dreamy? She meant irritating. Beady even.

The weather was unseasonably cold already and he was sporting a pair of corduroy pants and a somewhat ugly argyle sweater that she knew had been a Christmas gift from his mother last year. Not the most stylish of outfits and yet somehow he looked like he’d walked out of the pages of an L.L.Bean catalog. Just because he was tall with broad shoulders and had really cute sandy-brown hair that flopped on his head because he needed a haircut. And today he was wearing his glasses. What was it about a large lumberjack-looking man who wore glasses? Why did that make her stomach twist up into knots? And then there was his lopsided smile…

What in the heck was she doing? This was Sawyer Wallace, lifelong friend and, more importantly, boss. She couldn’t size him up like a piece of meat. Especially because they worked together. Especially because of what had happened to her in New York.

“Riley,” he began.

“Sawyer,” she countered, and bit her lip in anticipation.

He reached into his top desk drawer and pulled out a colorful silk scarf. “Before I forget, Tony found this at The Brewside. Said you left it there a couple of weeks ago and he kept forgetting to give it to you.”

She reached for the bright yellow scarf with lime-green polka dots. One of her favorites.

“Thanks,” she mumbled. “Tony must have given this to you while you were on your date.” She used air quotes for the word date and wiggled her eyebrows.

Sawyer exhaled a long breath.

“What?” she asked, feigning innocence.

“‘Bayside’s forever bachelor’?” he quoted. “Really?”

She shrugged.

“I thought I told you to keep me out of the Bayside Blogger’s column.”

Release Date: January 4, 2018

THERE’S A FINE LINE BETWEEN LOVE AND HATE.

Despite being thrown from her home and stripped of her place in society at a young age, Madame Marce Davenport is proud of what she’s accomplished with her family and the notoriously scandalous Craven House. Except it’s all built on a lie. When an arrogant duke strode into her home years ago, offering her a way to keep the brothel open, she agreed to his game of deception. But now that her siblings have found their happiness, Marce can finally live the life she’s always wanted: one that embraces the truth. And that means severing ties with the man who has claimed too many of her days—both in reality, and fantasy.

Rowan Delconti, the Duke of Harwich, has been angry for so long: at his father, at the woman who broke apart his parents’ marriage, and at the children who won is father’s love. Guest Post: When to Let Go of Your Book

By Lauren Carr

Several months ago, I rejected a project in which an author asked me to edit his book. Not only did I turn down the job because my schedule does not allow me to edit other authors’ books anymore, but there was another reason I had turned down the project.

The first installment in a trilogy, the book had already been edited and released to the public to favorable reviews. Two years later, readers of this first book were waiting for the next installment, which the writer had still not finished. However, instead of focusing on completing the second book, he had decided to go back to work on the first—already completed and released—book.

Note that the changes this author wanted to make were not glaring grammatical errors that he wanted me to correct. Rather, a year or so after the book’s release, he had picked it up again and started reading it and decided that he could “fine-tune” it.

Frankly, this is not an uncommon problem with some writers. Just the other day I saw where the author of one book, which had been released three years ago, announced that he had just received his first shipment of this same book: “Revamped and Re-Released.”

Why? I wondered. This book had received a ton of good reviews. Why has he not moved on to write another book?

Some writers simply have a problem letting go.

Just like how some writers have a problem focusing on one project to its completion, other writers have the opposite problem. They can’t let go and walk away after having written the words “The End.”

There’s always at least one or two writers who can’t let go of “their baby” (as I heard one writer describe it) when I teach a novel writing class. They are easy to spot. They have a book inside them that they have been working on for five, ten, fifteen, or even twenty years.

I can still remember the very first thing I learned about writing on my first day of college. It was in my first writing class that my journalism professor said, “Writers never finish a project. They quit working on it.”

He went on to explain that a writer can edit, re-write, revise, and proofread an article, short story, or book over and over again, and still find sections that can be fine tuned or corrections to be made. That’s why professional writers must set a deadline in which they force themselves to walk away from the project—at which point they aren’t necessarily done, but rather they have let it go to move onto their next project.

This is why writers who don’t let go, walk away, and never look back will continue to write, edit, rewrite, re-edit, proofread one single book for their whole lives. Because—

In reality, it is impossible to finish writing a book.

Serious writers learn to let their books go. Admittedly, this can be very difficult—especially for those writers who view their books as “babies.” I once read an article by an editor who explained very simply, “It’s not a baby. It’s a book.”

Here’s a few pointers for writers who want to become prolific authors with more than one, twenty-year-old unfinished novel under their belt:

  • Set a deadline to finish your book. I have been told that writers with a journalism background learn early on how to let go. They are forced to due to tight deadlines. I was trained to get a project done by my deadline and then let it go, walk away, and then start on the next book. As a full-time author, I still work on self-imposed deadlines.
  • Make each round of editing and proofreading count. Remember that you will always find sections that can be “fine-tuned” every time you go through your book. With this in mind, set a limit of how many times you will read through your project and when you do, be ruthless in your search for errors.

Every writer is different. Personally, after completing the rough draft, I go through a manuscript to rewrite it. Then, I will edit it. After editing, I send it to my editor.  (While my current work in progress is with the editor, I will start working on my next book.) Then, after going through the edits, I will proofread the book after layout. That is five times that I will go through a book.

  • Once your book is released, don’t look back. Move onward! Unless you discover that your book has a big glaring flaw, resist the urge to read through it again. (Once, six weeks after a book was released, I was contacted by a reader who discovered that I had a city in the wrong country. This mistake was missed by two editors and a proofreader! I simply corrected that error—resisting the urge to look any further, and re-released the book.)

I guarantee, when you go back to look at a book you wrote a few years ago, you will definitely think, “Gee, I could have done that better,” Or “I should have done that.” Yes, every writer does that.

But, the pros who have more than one twenty-year-old unfinished book under their belt, they let each book go, direct their attention on the next book, and never look back.

They move on.
