Trace of Doubt by DiAnn Mills

Book Review Graphic

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime Book Tours in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

Trace of Doubt by DiAnn Mills was an interesting read, but I found that it was super predictable.  I have read quite a few books by this author in the past, and I know I will read more by her in the future.   I never hold it against an author if I find one of their books predictable because, with the number of books I have read in this genre, it is rare that I am totally shocked by a book.  I felt terrible for Shelby throughout most of the book because she spent years in prison for a murder she didn’t commit, and then when she gets out, people are trying to kill her.  I mean, come on, how many bad things can happen to one person.  I did spend a lot of the book hoping that Shelby and Denton would end up a couple when the book was over because they were perfect for each other.  I also liked that this book didn’t have any parts that would offend anybody in it.  If you love reading clean mystery books, then I would for sure pick up a copy of this book or any book by this author and give them a read.

A Plague Among Us by Deb Pines

Book Review Graphic

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime Book Tours in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

A Plague Among Us by Deb Pines was a  great mystery book.  The one thing that I didn’t like about this book is that there were so many different characters I had a hard time keeping them all straight.  This book is the ninth book in the series but you don’t have to read them all if you don’t want to.  I really enjoyed the author of this book and I know I will read more books by her in the future.  I thought that I knew who kill Al but when I got to the end of the book I realized how wrong I was.  I did love that the author include COVID in the plot of the book because it helped the book come to life as I was reading the book.  I also love that this book was more of a cozy mystery book not super intense like most books that I read.  If you are looking for a mystery book that isn’t super intense then I think you will enjoy this book.

About The Book

Genre: Mystery
Published by: KDP
Publication Date: July 1, 2021
Number of Pages: 280
ISBN: 979-8525017368
Series: Mimi Goldman Chautauqua Mysteries, Book 8 | Each book can be read as a Stand-Alone Mystery

When Al Martin, the editor of a satiric newspaper in Chautauqua, N.Y., reportedly dies of COVID-19, the local consensus is: good riddance.

A sister suspects foul play. She wonders why Al was cremated in a hurry.

The police stay out of it.

So it takes reporter and relentless snoop Mimi Goldman to try to find which of Al’s haters— including an estranged wife, three bitter siblings, a secretive caregiver, old enemies and the many targets of Al’s poison-pen sarcasm—might be a ruthless killer.

The novel, No. 8 in a series called “an Agatha Christie for the text-message age,” once again offers page-turning suspense. Wit. And the unforgettable setting of Chautauqua, a quirky, churchy, lakeside, Victorian cottage-filled summer arts community that launched an adult-education movement Teddy Roosevelt called “the most American thing in America.”

Kirkus Reviews calls A Plague Among Us “an intriguing and engaging crime tale” and “enjoyable novel” with “captivating characters.”

The Memory Bell by Kat Flannery

Book Review Graphic

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Partners In Crime Book Tours in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

The Memory Bell by Kat Flannery was an interesting book but not my favorite that I have read lately.  This book is a slow starter, so you need to give it a few chapters before you give up on the book.  I didn’t think that this book was super suspenseful, but it did have enough that kept me reading until I finished the book.  I know part of the reason that I had a hard time reading this book is that I didn’t connect with any of the characters in this story.  The only character that I have any feelings about would be Grace.  She always got on my nerves because of the choices that she kept making.    The author did a great job of making the family drama come to life as I was reading.  I love when authors are able to make their characters seem like they are real-life people.  I figured out who the killer was pretty early into the book, which is why I wasn’t the biggest fan of this book.  If you love books in this genre but don’t like when they are super suspenseful, then this book will be a great match for you.

Grace Penner’s safe haven crumbles when a body is found outside of town.

Gifted the memory bell, a family heirloom, from her grandfather’s will, Grace’s excitement is soon squashed when the bell gets broken right after she receives it. While gluing the pieces back in place, she discovers three are still missing.

Determined to find them, she is halted when the new detective, Bennet James, investigates her family. Grace is intent on showing the detective her family isn’t capable of murder, but as the investigation deepens, and pieces of the bell show up with ominous notes, Grace soon realizes the Penners are not what they seem. Amidst the tightly knit family; dark secrets, deception, and possibly even murder unfold.

Will Grace be able to save the family she loves more than anything without losing herself forever?

Praise for The Memory Bell:

“A naïve small-town girl and a disillusioned big-city cop, drawn together by an unsolved crime that is itself only the tip of the iceberg, The Memory Bell serves up the perfect steamy summer read.”
–Jenny Jaeckel, author of House of Rougeaux

“The story moves beyond a small town whodunit to probe the underlying bonds of history that connect a family.”
-Midwest Book Review

“Wonderful, engaging, and fast-paced! Flannery knows what she’s doing!”
-Jonas Saul, author of the Sarah Roberts series

Gone by S.H. Love

FTC: I received a free copy of this book from Audiobookworm in exchange for my honest review. I received no other compensation and the opinions expressed in this review are one hundred percent true and my own.

Gone by S.H. Love was a great book.  I was hooked right from the start of this book because although this is a genre that I read and listen to all the time, this plot was different from anything else that I have read.  I also really enjoyed the narrator’s voice, and I would love to listen to other books he reads in the future.  I listened to this entire book in one sitting because I had to know what was going on and what was going to happen next.  Just when I thought I had it all figured out, I would realize I was wrong and go back to trying to figure out what was happening.  This book kept me on the edge of my seat as I was listening to it, and I loved that.  I also didn’t see the ending coming, and it is always a good thing when I am reading books in this genre.  This book was just long enough to keep me interested but not so long that you get bored of the story before the end.  If you are looking for your next great read, I would pick up a copy of this audiobook.
