The Stanger She Married by Donna Hatch

Donna Hatch is the author of the best-selling “Rogue Hearts Series,” and a winner of writing awards such as The Golden Quill and the International Digital Award. A hopeless romantic and adventurer at heart, she discovered her writing passion at the tender age of 8 and has been listening to those voices ever since. She has become a sought-after workshop presenter, and also juggles freelance editing, multiple volunteer positions, and most of all, her six children (seven, counting her husband). A native of Arizona who recently transplanted to the Pacific Northwest, she and her husband of over twenty years are living proof that there really is a happily ever after.

When her parents and twin brother die within weeks of each other, Alicia and her younger sister are left in the hands of an uncle who has brought them all to financial and social ruin. Desperate to save her family from debtor’s prison, Alicia vows to marry the first wealthy man to propose. She meets the dashing Lord Amesbury, and her heart whispers that this is the man she is destined to love, but his tainted past may forever stand in their way. Her choices in potential husbands narrow to either a scarred cripple with the heart of a poet, or a handsome rake with a deadly secret.

Cole Amesbury is tormented by his own ghosts, and believes he is beyond redemption, yet he cannot deny his attraction for the girl whose genuine goodness touches the heart he’d thought long dead. He fears the scars in his soul cut so deeply that he may never be able to offer Alicia a love that is true. When yet another bizarre mishap threatens her life, Alicia suspects the seemingly unrelated accidents that have plagued her loved ones are actually a killer’s attempt to exterminate every member of her family. Despite the threat looming over her, learning to love the stranger she married may pose the greatest danger to her heart. And Cole must protect Alicia from the killer who has been exterminating her family before she is the next target.

This romantic story of loss and betrayal, forgiveness and redemption, and strangers marrying, will leave you laughing, crying, and swooning. Sprinkled liberally with suspense, mystery, and heart-melting kisses, this is not your ordinary historical tale of an arranged marriage nor of redeeming the rakes. Fans of Victorian and Regency Eras as well as those seeking clean and wholesome romance with plenty of chemistry, not to mention the redemptive power of love, will love this story!

Dance with a duke, outwit pirates, save a kingdom, and fall in love. Believe in happily ever after.

Snippet:
As Cole looked down into Alicia Palmer’s face, he knew of a surety she was worth any risk. She touched him in a place he’d thought long dead.
A younger man wearing a saucy grin approached Miss Palmer. “Did you save me a dance, Lissie?”
Cole’s initial irritation for the man’s cheekiness faded to puzzlement. He knew him from somewhere. A vague unease arose.
When the young man’s gaze moved to Cole, he paled visibly. “You!”
Miss Palmer gasped. “Robert Palmer, where are your manners?”
Of course. Robert Palmer. From London. Cold dread trickled  across  his  heart  as  he  considered  the ramifications.
Palmer pinned him with a dangerous glare. “Stay away from my cousin.”
“Your cousin?” Cole looked from him to the lovely Miss Palmer and understanding dawned. He cursed under his breath. He hadn’t been aware Armand Palmer had a sister. Not that he’d bothered to find out. The possible ramifications took a more serious turn.
Miss Palmer sent Cole a look of apology and turned to her cousin. “Robert, explain yourself.”
In a cold sweat, Cole waited for her condemning stare.
Palmer trembled in rage. He spoke quietly, but each word shot through Cole like bullets fired at close range. “He’s the scoundrel who shot your twin.”

Snippet:

“C’est dommage. Le département de chocolat cannot you take.”
Marie Claire’s bluntness quickened Lainey’s heartbeat. Heat radiated from her face, her heartbeat pulsed into her head. Her brow lifted off her skull. Please, don’t pass out, she silently prayed. She didn’t want to know how hard the granite floor was. “Why not?”

“Bad economy, vous voyez,” she said. “Their budget was cut dernière minute. There is no money. You have to return home.”
“But I’ve come so far.” She couldn’t return home, not when she was in the lobby. Not when she could almost smell the chocolate. She closed her eyes, breathing deeply, hoping to stop the train wreck inside her head. All she envisioned was the image of her beaming parents waving goodbye as she bustled through security. What would their expressions be if she returned home tomorrow? “What am I going to do?” she asked.
Marie Claire shrugged with a pained expression on her face.
Chocolate! Lainey needed chocolate!
Her tongue lolled in her mouth, craving a molten blob of chocolatey goodness to soothe her spirits and calm her heart, but the delayed flights depleted her choco-stash. There was nothing left—zilch, nada, rien du tout.
“Is there somewhere else I can work? Some other department? Some other job?” She would mop floors, empty trash cans, anything at Alpine Foods. She didn’t say this aloud. It wasn’t the best bargaining chip to appear too needy. Maybe she could wander the lobby with a sign around her neck, “Will work for chocolate.” Her nose tingled. She sneezed. She always sneezed right before she cried. “Please. I’m willing to do anything.”
Marie Claire handed her a scented tissue, biting her lip, her eyebrows peaked with sympathy. She patted Lainey’s hand. “Wait. I see what I can do. Maybe one of the other departments can you take.” She lifted the phone at the reception desk, dialed a number, and spoke in such rapid French Lainey couldn’t keep up.

Abandon Hope by Angelique Conger

Angelique Conger discovered the wonders of writing books later in her life. Books, however, have always been important to her. As a little girl in a small town, she was given her own library card at the tender age of five, highly unusual in those days.
Angelique reads a book, or three at once, much of the time. She reads most genres of books and until recently only toyed with writing them. Since beginning, she has spent many hours each day learning the craft of writing and editing.
Many would consider Angelique Conger’s books Christian focused, and they are because they focus on early events in the Bible. She writes of a people’s beliefs in Jehovah. However, though she’s read in much of the Bible and searched for more about these stories, there isn’t much there. Her imagination fills in the missing information, which is most of it.
Angelique lives in Southern Nevada with her husband, turtles, and Lovebird. She enjoys visits with her grandchildren — and their parents.

Snippet:

David put his arm around her. “It can be done. We will find a way.”
Daphne turned into his comforting arms. “I do not know how. There are not fifty items that will bring even a few silvers. How will we ever sell enough to get the fifty golds?”
“Like I said, together, we will find a way.” David tightened his embrace around her.
Daphne leaned on his shoulder. “I hope so. I miss Papa.” The tears she had worked so hard to rein in began to drip down her face.

“Come on, slowpoke!” I yelled at the brown-haired  fifteen-year-old girl following me.
“Your legs are longer than mine, jerk,” she retorted on a huff. “Slow down.”
I turned and checked on her, she was climbing the hill easily behind me. Her face was flush from our run up the lower portion, and her blue eyes sparkling. She looked more relaxed then I’d seen her all summer. Normally, Payton, or Pay as I called her, was as laid back as they came. This summer for some reason when she’d shown up, she’d been different. More reserved.
“If we don’t hurry, we’re going to miss it,” I chided, reaching my hand out for hers.
She looked up, and when she saw my hand, her cheeks turned a darker shade of pink. I shook it with a ‘take it’ look on my face, with a roll of her eyes, she did intertwining our fingers. I picked up the pace again and brought her along with me.
A minute later, we reached the top and plopped down on the large rock. She broke the connection of our hands and sat on hers. I missed it instantly, but let it go. As we’d gotten older, the simple things we used to do together turned a little weird. I wasn’t sure why. We were friends.
“I’m going to miss this,” she whispered wistfully, taking in the landscape.

We were sitting at the top of a hill that overlooked some of the pastures on my grandparent’s property. It gave us the perfect view of the mountains and the sunset. On the last day of the summer, we would come up here and sit. We had flashlights in our backpacks for the walk back.
“Me too,” I agreed. “But there is always next summer.”
Payton had been coming to visit her grandmother every summer since she was five. The two of us clicked immediately. Our grandmothers started this tradition of bringing us up here, we continued it on our own when we turned ten. Swearing we didn’t need them to babysit us.  Since it was only a mile from one of the barns on our property, they hadn’t argued.
“Right,” she sighed sadly.
“Something you aren’t telling me?”
“Not that I know of,” Pay replied. “Mom is just acting weird when I bring up coming back. Told Gram we would talk about it later.”
My breath caught. The idea of not seeing her made my chest hurt. I counted on summers with Payton. Sure, I had friends in school, but there was something about her. I didn’t have to put on an act. I could just be me with her.
The sunset that night was beyond amazing. Purples, pinks, reds, and oranges swirled together, putting on a show that I’d never forget. When the colors started to fade and the sun started to dip below the mountain in front of us, I felt Pay slide her hand back into mine. I looked over and saw tears leaving trails down her face. Squeezing her hand, I faced forward again and put up a silent prayer; this wouldn’t be the last time we did this.

Snippet:

Devon still couldn’t quite believe he’d brought Olivia to the race track or that she’d agreed to come race in the first place. Remind him to never play poker with her, seeing as she’d aptly called his bluff.
Smart woman.
Now he had to hire a tutor with her. He only hoped it left him more time for the track, like she’d promised. Especially since the guys were all giving him the side eye as if he’d broken some unspoken rule. Yeah, yeah, chicks didn’t hang out where engines screamed and the smell of oil and gas was prevalent. But it didn’t really matter in the end, seeing as women didn’t understand the need for speed, the desire to control something that was solely in your hands. Olivia was dainty and proper, so it wasn’t as if she was going to come back after today. She just wanted to share a tutor to help them study better. Badly, apparently.
Devon had patiently shown her how to approach the race track, how to handle the car and its speed. Then they’d raced against each other. He’d pulled ahead at the last second instead of letting her win, but when he met her on the tarmac she was grinning as if she’d won at NASCAR.
“That was such a rush,” she said, tugging off her helmet. Her hair was a mess, sweat lining her brow from the Carolina’s October heat, her eyes sparkling. “I can see why you love it.”
“Yeah?” Devon felt surprised. “You liked it?”
“Loved it.” She paused as though trying to put her feelings into words. “It’s like I’m guzzling adrenaline as an energy drink.”
He chuckled, knowing the feeling. It was incredible and habit-forming. And watching Olivia absorb the activity with such gusto, he wondered if she might truly get it.
“It’s…it’s like you’re thumbing your nose at life,” she said. “No…like you’re finally free.” She laughed. “It’s bad-ass. Adrenaline is addictive.” She gave him a playful shove. “You should have warned me.”
“I didn’t expect you to like it,” he admitted.
“How could I not? I feel…”
“Alive?”
“Yes!” She was practically dancing with the discovery. “And invincible! Except you aren’t. You could lose control at any second and that would be it. But because you’re the one at the wheel, you don’t die. You have your own life in your hands and nobody else gets a say.”
His smile grew. How about that. Olivia, the most unexpected person, understood racing.
“I totally get my sister’s collection of speeding tickets now,” she continued, her face―her very body language―electric with excitement. Even in that grubby, borrowed old racing suit she looked radiant.
“I don’t recommend you driving like that on city streets,” he warned.
“Oh, I won’t.” She swung her helmet as they moved toward the air conditioned change rooms to discard their fire-retardant driving gear. She fluffed her hair and checked to make sure her diamond studs were still secured in her delicate lobes. “But I get it now—that feeling of being totally on the edge, knowing things could change in a moment, but they don’t because I choose for them not to. Talk about power and control!”
“You want to go again?”
“Next weekend?”
“Sure.”
She slipped her free hand into his, giving it a squeeze, her eyes alight with enthusiasm. Her giddiness dissipated as she met his gaze, their connection crackling with mutual need. She took a step closer, their hands still locked together.
“Thank you for bringing me here,” she said softly.
Without thinking, he leaned over and dropped a kiss on her lips. She cupped his head, not allowing him to end the kiss, which started out tender, sweet. As they relaxed, enjoying the exploration, their kisses grew deeper, more insistent and probing. Weeks of teasing and holding back since the September party had punched holes in their walls of resistance and now it was crumbling, their passion and need unleashed with a fury that had Devon bracing them against the door to the change rooms, not wanting to end the kiss, come up for air or to see any inkling of doubt on Olivia’s face. This felt right. More right than anything he’d ever known.

Where’s the harm in pretending to be engaged for a couple months?

Elliott Palmer’s brilliant impulse to propose a fake engagement to his sister’s teacher in order to get rid of a stalker may be the biggest mistake of his life. Or it could be the best thing to happen since his cookie empire went national.

Charlotte Bloomberg feels like she’s walking a tightrope at work after the scandal last year that almost cost her teaching job. Yet…Elliott’s proposal could be the answer to her saving face with not only her co-workers, but her family, too.

As the two work through school calamities, nosy family members, and a stalker getting closer all the time, the lines between real and fake start to blur when hearts get involved. But what happens when the police insist a wedding date will bring the stalker out in the open, and Elliott suspects Charlotte of being a crook?

Snippet:

“We’ll need to be sort of touchy-feely this weekend.”
“I figured,” he agreed, thinking that he would finally get another chance to kiss her.
“I hope you don’t mind.”
Elliott caught on to Charlotte’s lack of enthusiasm for touching him and his excitement over having reasons to kiss her faded. “We’ll keep it to a minimum. I wouldn’t want to embarrass you.”
“I…oh, okay.”
Clouds had filled the sky the further west they drove, and it started to rain. Elliott flipped on the windshield wipers, his eagerness for the weekend clouded up with the sky and the once peaceful atmosphere seemed strained. After the vibes he got when she cut his hair, he had almost convinced himself they could turn their engagement into the real thing eventually. How could he feel such a strong pull of attraction, with all the zips, zaps, and zings that went with it, and it not affect her? One haircut and she had him eating out of her hand. Until now. Now, he realized it was all on his end. Her nervousness that night probably just hid her repulsion. That must be why she kept pulling away. Except for that one kiss. The more he thought about it, he realized it had been the most amazing kiss he’d ever experienced. Things like that didn’t happen every day. Did they?
Five hours and twenty minutes from the time they left Charlotte’s place in Spokane, they pulled into an ordinary looking apartment building two blocks off the freeway on the east side of Portland. Charlotte wanted to introduce him to Lizzie and her mom before he met everyone else. Leaving his carry-on and garment bag in the car, he followed Charlotte to the second floor.
But Elliott didn’t want the tension in the car to expose their charade. Before they went inside, he needed to clear the air. He rushed alongside Charlotte. As soon as she pushed the doorbell and ignoring the surprise on her face, he pulled her close and covered her mouth with his. At first, she stiffened. He thought she would push him away but prolonging the kiss, pulling her closer, he finally felt her lips and body relax and her hands crept up his arms until they squeezed his shoulders. Elliott angled his mouth and deepened the kiss, drawing it out, and tried to convince Charlotte of his intentions without words. Even with her coat between them, Elliott could feel her heart racing, and it gave him courage. Maybe she just needed to be courted.
The door whisked open, and Elliott vaguely heard, “You’re here!”
Elliott slowly broke away from their kiss and kept his eye on Charlotte, who stood a little wobbly with her eyes closed, a dreamlike expression on her face. He took her hand and brought it to his lips briefly. Satisfied that the stage was now properly set, he turned to the young woman standing in the doorway and held out his free hand.
“Hi. You must be Lizzie. I’m Elliott, Charlotte’s fiancé.”
